Chief Greenberg used to do a thing where he would get a few HUNDRED roller skaters and they would skate from City Hall to Middleton Gardens up Hwy. 61. Him being the Chief it was rather easy to get police escorts and road closings along the route.

(For those of you who aren't up on your ancient history, Greenberg was before Mullins. He roller skated all over downtown. Used to put on his skates and direct traffic on to the reverse lanes of the Pearman Bridge during afternoon rush hour. Would see him occasionally freestyling on the terrace at the Customs House.)

Can I request that we do it after April 16? I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and I'm not cleared to skate until then. If it has to be before then, no problem, I'll be cheering you guys on from the sidewalk. (But I really want to participate).

Also, I recommend we get a facebook event going once we have a date set. That way we can just invite every skater we know and tell them to invite every skater they know. And if you see anyone on the street skating to class or something, let them know / get their name and invite them to the event on fb! This could get huge yet still low-profile if we play our cards right.

I'm a senior and I'm moving up north in May, and I think this would be a really great thing to put my energy into, and for us to put our collective energy into.

Awesome idea Articanalog. +Rep for you.

Not a huge fan of the font, but it looks pretty dope to me.

Saturday seems to make the most sense, what with classes being during the week and Sunday being a huge deal down south. We don't want to get booked for hindering the city's church-goers haha.

ya agreed, like I said that's just a rough I played with. Working on a possible sponsor too...but in that case it would have to be legal ie. close down the street which i'm not sure would fly or not.

Yeah, but I think we could do it if we played our cards right. A sponsor would be great, and if we let the city know that we have a sponsor and are doing it for charity (show them we have out sh*t together) I think we have a decent chance. Who's the potential sponsor? That would be pretty cool...

Ya that'd be dope. I haven't even talked with the sponsor yet just hopefully a possibility. I have family friends in this company called Rebootizer and they have an office in Charleston. It's like an antioxidant health drink thing. Hopefully I'll get some positive feed back when my buddy brings it up to them today.

    talk to local skate shops.

contests and swag to win... if it is going to be completely legal. you may have to push the dates back a bit.. city planning is like giving birth. painful

Go to the courthouse. Not all hoodratted up though, to suits, appearance is everything.

trust me i work for them (suits). Ask questions. Get answers, be respectful though, the frighten at the lack of respect. Then they freak out, and all is lost.

Note: words of wisdom, just play the game and get results.

Oh no haha dude I didn't mean that. My family brought me up well and I'm a brilliant with charming people with smiles heh. I could make **** happen I'm sure with a nice shave and hair cut but I just need to come up with a platter of things to present to whoever the listener may be. This is the official thread to talk about this so spitball ideas as I'm doing.

Love you guys, this will be a sight for sore eyes.

well safety, EMT's Either on call or on standby.
police to block the roads, or barricades.

numbers, tell them what your aiming for and projected numbers.

what it is, give them this site so they can see what we are about. what this event might entail.

just throw them ideas, try to get a younger person. not some old dude who hates to have fun.

if we can find a charity and charge to participate that would be a plus too, would probably settle in their stomachs better as well.

it seems more feasible to pull off an out-law push race. Then the only hassle would be getting contestants, prizes and shirts- perhaps a small silverfish builder could donate a deck as first prize and some of the cool online retailers could send some small swag. Get donations from the racers to donate t-shirt funds- or we could get packs of shitty white-tees from the dollar store and sharpie them up...

Indeed. However I live downtown and sometimes still get hassled by police for just skating on the road. I don't want this event to burn any bridges with cops and fuel them to hate skateboard commuting even more. Something for everyone who lives downtown to think about.

I'm all for an outlaw, but it could ruin skating for the locals. I don't think them shutting down the main street in Charleston is very likely either though.
since skating is legal as long as no one damages anything or hurts anyone it should be fine. May just need to notify the police that its gonna happen

Honestly the point of a race is to go fast, so as long as we dont get rolled before we start as a group, then by the time anyone would be trippin on us, the race would be over. i really think our biggest issue is having more than 10 or 15 people show up. Also the police should never be notified of this till the papers the next day- they will shut us down in a heartbeat. But i do think if we can get a good amount of people to come, we can find a sponsor or 2 to help get prizes or shirts and flyers. But yes, i think the first things we need to do are: Set a date. Set a course. Get more people.
