I haven't seen any posts about spots in / around Atlanta GA, so I'm going to start adding some. Anyone else in the area?
Rhyne Park in Smyrna GA (North West of Atlanta)
This is a great spot to longboard. It's an old park, so it's usually deserted. Good steep hill for sliding / bombing. Lot's of slight inclines for carving / cross-stepping. Right near my house, so I thought I'd start here.
We need to meet up sometime. I have tons of great mild dh, carve, and pump spots all over Gwinnett. There is also BigCreek Greenway in Alpharetta. I haven't skated it yet, but i want to as soon as it's warm.
Two other places that I can think of are Shorty Howell Park on Pleasant Hill, tons of great multi-use paved trails. And Sweetwater Park just off of Cruze Rd and Old Norcross Rd. Great pocket park with a really cool wrap around multi-use paved trail. Definately a good workout.
Pickneyville also has some good trails and a little crappy bowl/freeskate kickflipper area for the young'uns.
Good to see someone in the ATL that is my age. We should definitely plan something. I have been trying to get in touch with the old guys from Echo Mill in Marietta. They apparently have a crew in their neighborhood of 35 to 40 yr olds that dh/carve the n'hood in the evenings out there.
Also, if you ever get out to my neck of the woods, this is a map of my neighborhood. The red are steep dh's, the orange are mild to medium dh/carve, the green are mild cruise/pump/cross-steppable runs. The circle is a little less than a mile, to give you perspective.
Yeah, we'll definitely have to get together. Hopefully we'll have some warm weather again soon. Thanks for the map and the links, that Big Creek Greenway looks pretty cool.
Glad to see there's another person my age skatin' in ATL.
I skate almost every day recently. I am losing weight and feeling good. 23 lbs off so far. We should meet up on a weekend and skate the Greenway. I haven't been there yet but, it looks like fun. Just to let you know, I do suck at anything other than cruise/carve/pump. Trying but not there yet. Hit me on email. I pm'd you.
and google "tripp arnold" and "echo mill" read the article. you will love it.
this is the only "spot" I'm at liberty to give up right now.
This is Central park in North East GA ( pm for specifics). a friend and I basically run this place. Know all the main cops( the local precinct is in the park),and most park workers, they are very friendly with us,but it took lots of time,so please be respectful of the sheep pushing strollers in front of you and what not. Lots and lots of low-to higher speed carving, a few decent Downhill runs(short and not too fast but fun). You have to really work to use it's potential but it's 5mins down the road, and it's where i test all my insane junk boards.
red-pretty fast,nothing too crazy
yellow-fast carving
green-mellow nice carving.
orange- with bump drafting this run can be very very fast.
Dogs and Strollers beware. We have many close calls with the locals that dont see us everyday.Place is real fun if you happen smoke the pot, mellow, to cruise, and just enough to exite you in parts. it's not worth long travel but if you should happen to cruise by,give us a shout. the 2 of us dominate because were the only two, hah.
Camel,is your neighborhood really skatable(the red downhill in particular),as far as traffic goes?
pps. We're looking for pretty serious Downhill runs around north, northeast Ga area. Our abandoned hot lap circuit got Dozed for Development :[
Yup, I have done it on a flowboard a ton of times. I don't have near enough balls or little enough brains to try it on my Vanguard. I like stuff that is a little mellower in nature. It is skate-able to the front of the n'hood in the late evening. I still wouldn't do it without a spotter with a whistle and a flashlight at the corner onto the circle. I think you would be laid out full extension with slide glove to make it around that 90. It would be an impressive sight though. I will try to take some pictures at some point, or just give it a try sometime. I would be impressed if you could make that corner at speed considering the grade above it. It's not a really long run, maybe 1/2 mile total, you would kill it in 60 seconds. You would also be blowing through 2 stop signs. Late night or mid-workday would be your only really safe time.
There are lots of good n'hoods around me, Wild Timber is another with tons of cool longish runs (for an n'hood).
Her are a couple more good pics:
Shorty Howell Park in Gwinnett
Abandoned Shopping Center on Pleasant Hill rd.
I couldn't detail the topo for the park, there is too much of it and I don't have time to do it now. Maybe later. But this is generally my training ground.
If you guys like parking garages and are in midtown, there is a fun one in tech square, the small part of georgia tech on the other side of the highway. its right off spring street and between 4th and 5th street.
Are there any good skateshops that have a decent selection of longboard stuff?? I pretty much bounce between Marietta and Milledgeville so I go through Atlanta every month or so.

Yeah, go to Woody's. It's on peachtree parkway in the shopping center with the Chik-fil-a. See if you can get John to help you. He's super nice and really knows his stuff. I'd guess probably a little over half the shop is longboards, so go check it out sometime.
Inland Board Shop in Hiram. Probably the best all around board shop in the metro. By the way, anyone wanna join the Sunday Morning Breakfast Club???? We're gonna start meeting every sunday morning at a different garage/hill for coffee, donuts, and bombing. No board??? We've got you covered. Spread the word
