Powerhouse Road!
Ok guys, letting you in on a new spot for DH in the Cumming/Sugar Hill area. I have been driving Buford Dam road for years and have never seen Powerhouse road open. It is a paved road that leads to the bottom of the dam on the opposite side of the Lower Pool Park. The entrance to the road is next to Upper Overlook park but is always locked. It just so happens that they had it open for the holiday and fireworks for the past few days so I took a drive down the road to check it out. A gorgeous stretch of pavement that runs for almost a mile. True DH, I would assume speeds of 35-55 mph at full bore, maybe higher. Canopied trees, so the sun doesn't creep in and heat it up too much. Sweeping turns, long runouts, etc... Here is the google map link:
powerhouse road buford dam - Google Maps
Look for the big crook in Buford Dam road, follow away from the dam then look south away from the lake. It runs all the way to the bottom of the dam. You can imagine the elevation change. I was on the brakes in the car the entire way down the hill.
I really want to get out and do this on a weekday when the road is closed from access at the top. The best bet for unrestricted access is to Park at the Lower Pool Park, cross the river on the foot bridge, walk up the road from the bottom. That way you aren't breaking any rules. I doubt you would have any trouble or any cars to contend with at all. Someone needs to hit this road. I am hoping my Cumming buddies on the list will take the challenge. (I will go with you if I can. You can call me for details. PM for my cell.)
Good riding and Happy 4th!

I thought about going there, but I didn't have a board decent garadge board till a few days ago, and I left marietta to go back to college. Next time I'm in town though I'd be interested, only live a mile from the square.

Re: Atlanta Longboarder Registry
someone needs to put together a huge garage session somewhere in atlanta. im just so envious of the northwest longboarding crew cuz their sessions are HUGE!!! who knows.. maybe we could get woody's out for some prizes even though bombing garages is nothin like DH. i know alot of people who skate for woody's and im pretty tight with the staff so we might be able to get it done.
-
Re: Atlanta Longboarder Registry
Speaking of Woody's, did anyone get out to Grant Park on Friday? I don't go much because it takes me more than an hour to get there. We need a Friday/Saturday night thing out here in the Gwinnett/Forsyth area.
The only problem with garages is that you eventually get tossed out on your butt. Public parks like John has set up for the Grant Park meet are prime. Public property, no real issues.
I would love to put together a Powerhouse Session for a Saturday afternoon or something. I know at least 5 or 6 guys that would be down for that. I would bring a couple of extra decks and what not. We could even grill out at the park on the river, make a day of it.
John might be interested in getting some folks out for that. Who knows... I bet Kelly or Matt would be down for doing some DH in a new spot for sure.

Re: Atlanta Longboarder Registry
i was going to go out to grant park friday but i ended up being busy.
i am going without a doubt this friday , as long as it doesnt rain.
as for that powerhouse session, im down, but where should you do it?
id really like to do the silver comet, but its kind of a hassle cuz i only have my permit,
so if anyone in gwinnett is going out there, let me know and we can carpool. btw i live in lawrenceville/snellville.
btw do any of you know ryan and sam? idk their last names but they longboard, and work at brookrun.
i know sam used to work at woodys...
i suppose its all downhill from here, huh?

Re: Atlanta Longboarder Registry
I know Ryan, great guy. And the Powerhouse Session would be at Powerhouse road. At Buford Dam.
Silver Comet is fun. I will be going back in the next month or so. I will hit you up when I get a group together. I also have a van for carting a bunch of folks out there.
You should try Big Creek Greenway in Alpharetta. It's not that far away compared to the SC.
Some of the local stuff I hit:

Re: Atlanta Longboarder Registry
Guys, (and girls if there are any)
A couple of buddies and I are going to try to do a Powerhouse Road Session on Saturday (tomorrow). If anyone wants to come out, shoot me some email or a PM on SilverFishLongboarding.com (Camel). I will give directions. I don't expect to be there before 2-2:30 pm. We will probably park at the Lower Pool Park and traverse the river bridge to get there. For those of you that don't know, Powerhouse Road goes from the top of Buford Dam to the bottom of Buford Dam. It is closed to vehicle traffic all but three days (holidays) per year. The asphalt is good with very little surface imperfection. Should be some fun free riding. Pads and helmets are appreciated and suggested. For you crazies, leathers and a full face won't be frowned upon. Downhilling fun for everyone. Hopefully the Army Core of Engineers won't have a problem with us since it is open to foot and bike traffic. We will also be meeting at another spot for pre-run warm ups in a location that hasn't been disclosed.
Thanks, that is all...

Re: Atlanta Longboarder Registry
Marco- if we get anything more serious than just a few friends skating for a couple of hours, I will be sure to let you know. I want to try and get a Saturday BBQ and Freeriding /DH session. Maybe get Woody's to help out on organizing it. Matt Karg wanted to come out and run Powerhouse when he gets back in town. That could help us get a Woody's thing going.
