dh comps in this region??
so i've desperately been wanting to enter a dh competition, but the problem is that i live in arkansas and cant really afford to fly all over the continent to enter races. are there any races in this region that i could possibly drive to??

you ever skate the mountain tower rd. in hot springs? i've driven it, but i was wondering if it was too flat in sections.

i've thought about it, but after all the crap w/ skaters downtown i'm skeptical to do anything around there. i still might do it tho. west mountain looks pretty good too. i'll probably try west first.

Re: dh comps in this region??
I'm about to start working with Loaded to organize events in the South east, east coast, and north east area.
I'm going to be living in Boone, NC which has quite a few good DH areas.
Perhaps in the future we'll throw a DH contest.

For sure.
It's all very premature right now, hopefully we get it kicked off this summer.

Re: dh comps in this region??
i've also considered putting on an event on the mountain tower rd, but i wasn't sure about speeds. plus it's in a national park which could make even more red tape to cross. It's still in the back of my mind. If you ever decide it's something you want to do talk to me, i've helped organize events before.
I'm just not sure an event in arkansas could draw the numbers to break even and the mountain tower rd would require a huge amount of hay. i've videotaped the road and the problem is that it has so many switchbacks on the downhill portion of the road that you wouldn't be able to take the turns all that fast and if i remember correctly after a few of the hairpins it get's pretty level, so i'm not so sure speedboarders would carry enough speed to the next turn. they may be tempted to start kicking again.
West Mountain is bigger, but a lot less turns, plus you have to deal with two way traffic.
Brian, let me know if you need a hand.

west mountain would be scary fast if you start from the top. that coupled w/ the sharp turns and drop offs into woods might be a litttle too dangerous, but we'll see.

hmmm, idk. maybe i just thought they were super sharp becuase i was thinking about doing them and there would be cars coming the other way, but it if was closed off it would probably be good.

Re: dh comps in this region??
google earth coordinates for tops of mountains:
mountain tower:
34*31'03.16" N 93*02'44.26" W
west mountain
34*30'30.72" N 93*04'04.31" W
i'll try to film them soon tho since google earth doesn't really do much justice for hills. you can still get an idea tho.

Here's a picture of three turns in panoramic view from Mountain Tower Rd. Again i have no idea if this hill is fast enough.
i'll try to upload the video i have later. probably on monday.

Re: dh comps in this region??
Looks nice, does that paint on the second picture cause any problems?
Up here in NC, there are a ton of roads like that, all over the place. I'm just waiting to find a one lane road with switchbacks.

Re: dh comps in this region??
I've never ridden it. But yeah this road is a one way so with a chase driver you don't have to worry about traffic at all.

I live in Hot Springs and I downhill Tower Mountain biweekly. The road is a perfect race road. A course could be setup to be almost a mile and a half worth of downhilling. I've had a top speed of 48 MPH at the bottom with a motorcycle following me. Also, there's no trouble with going too slow if you grip all the corners. If you're freeriding, it's tough to keep speed up.
I've never had any trouble with cops or park rangers. Everyone I meet just talks to me wondering why I'm skateboarding down a mountain. A friend of mine and I have been wanting to start a race for sometime now on the hill. I'm glad I found this post.
