Does anyone know if there's a UNM sponsored longboarding team/group/club/whatever? I haven't seen anything about one if there is. If there isn't one, let me know if you're interested and maybe we can start something up. UNM can provide a limited amount of support as well as long as we're active and what not.

I've been told that there was a club at UNM a while ago, but it has died. All of the paperwork should still be there, so all you'll have to do to get it restarted is find people and a president. I think...
I am gonna be a freshmen as well. Word on the street is you can get paid for being a president of a club?
I might be down when I figure out the work load for my classes and everything.

You can't get paid for being the president of a club, but the group as a whole might be able to get a small amount of financial support for gear/etc. We need to find a sponsor, so I'll start looking into it. I'm usually around campus boarding after 6, so come talk to me.

You ever some kid with long hear, wearing generic black rock t shirt, and jeans?
Most likely riding a Scimitar, or board with pink trucks? That's me. I'll be riding a Ghoti Syren around there most of the time now though...
I'm there quite a bit. If you wanna skate sometime PM me. We can meet up with some Team Albuquerque members.
I know of some places/people/groups that may sponsor, but first I'd concentrate on the UNM end of the end of the deal, otherwise that changes what they're sponsoring. You know what I mean? We can still make another team, it just might not be a school "chartered" one...

I would go talk to the guys at Mob Shop. I know most of the people who hang out there go to UNM, so maybe they will know something.
I was thinking we might be able to get the UNM parking division to sponsor us. We make an arrangement with them, we don't skate the garages, and we don't let our friends skate the garages, then like twice a month we have everyone in the club thingy sign wavers, and have massive night garage bombs when there's guaranteed no cars.
What do you guys think?

Hell yeah, if we could pull that off that would be awesome. UNM also loves it when their groups do charity work. I was thinking we could figure out a way to hand out free pads (with incentives to wear them) to all the middle school kids boarding around on campus. The university would probably love that, and it would add to our legitimacy.

Easyer might be to demo boards to people as a way to exercise, commute green, etc. Get pads and helmets for those people to wear, that way we wouldn't need as many donations, and it's still somewhat community service.
Anyone know if that push race is actually going down? We could meet and talk things over with everyone there.....

I've been talking to some boarders while cruising around on campus, and I'm receiving some very positive feedback. Let's make this happen!

Do you know who to talk to regarding this? I have next week pretty much free during the day, if I'm correct in my thinking, if you want to start working on this.

How to get the UNM cops back on our side?

I think that's brilliant. I'd been thinking of writing a letter to the UNM Police Department gently pointing out that their former policy of looking the other way when longboarders skate the garage is actually a GREAT way to keep rapists, muggers, taggers, hoodlums, &c., OUT of the UNM Parking Structure. Criminals don't like being seen, and creeps are unlikely to risk bothering women getting into their cars if they're likely to get stomped by five or six strong, healthy young skaters while doing so.
Each time I've seen UNM go on an anti-skater rampage against longboarders, it's been a direct result of jackass shortboarders (usually high school boys) trashing the garage, leaving beer bottles and garbage everywhere, frightening old folks and generally doing everything possible to attract police attention to what used to be a friendly, laid-back and cop-free skate spot.
We need to stay on friendly terms with the UNM cops. Most of them are cool, and couldn't care less if you bomb the garage, but what happens is that the UNM administration gets freaked out when they hear about some sh!thead shortboarder smacking a professor upside the head with his board (as happened last fall). The school is worried about its liability, and the risk of an expensive embarrassing lawsuit.
They're right. If we don't police ourselves, the cops will do it for us. If you see a skater spray-painting the garage, or tossing beers off the roof, etc., please gently explain to him that he's bringing the cops down on all his friends by doing so.

So true.
I've been looking some stuff up and here's what we need...
1) Constitution and bylaws
2) Officers
3) Faculty advisor
4) A strong group base
5) A short statement of purpose
6) A name
As for the last, I was thinking "UNM Freeriders" or "UNM Lobo Freeriders." I think this would highlight the varied interests we have in the sport. Any other suggestions would be awesome so we can get a group consensus. I'll work on getting us a faculty advisor, I think I know a guy who would be willing.

Thursday around 6:30 the people interested are gonna meet at the Frontier, and talk things over, and try and get this thing figured out. Everyone should come if they can.
