south mountain race. We need to fill out the paperwork here ftp://www.phoenix.gov/pub/PARKS/evap4109b.pdf and we need a 400 dollar application fee. We would also need to figure out how to get some haybails. If I can get a couple of people to help organize this, and we get enough sponsors for the event, this could be a reality. If you’re down to help out with organizing or whatever let me know. Also how many people would be down to come to race this?
Like i said , they insurance is gaurenteed to be more then 400. For the pusher if i recall right in needed THOUSANDS of dollars in insurance, adn thats a push race with no cliffs, gaurdrails, and steep hills. So i would call the city first and seee whar insurance looks like first

yeah, I'll call or email someone later today and see if we can get an estimate. I think with the amount of people that a race on south mountain would attract there would be enough to pay for the fees. also for this type of race we could set the entry fee a bit higher.
it would really help me out if I could get a rough estimate of how many people would be interested in racing
You could charge $100 entry fee, and with enough people and sponsors you could easily cover the charges.
that's what I'm thinking, I'm definitely gonna try to make this thing happen, although it isn't my first priority because I have college and work right now
I know I would make it out for that. Also, I'm sure some of the other CO guys would as well. I don't know about sponsors or anything, but I'm sure we can wrangle some up. I'm with everyone else though, if you get a serious estimate to let us know what we're really looking at, I'd be willing to do what I can for it.

It's all about the insurance/advertising. Like cole said, probly gonna be a hefty fee but it all depends on how much attention can be drawn and how many people get out here. If it does happen you know wildchild will hop on as a sponsor.

I'm down to help organize an event. I suggest if anything we do it somewhere up north however. I think all the paperwork and resistance from the town/fee's would be a little less, The environment is better as far as screnery, not as many cactus to slam into, ground will be softer and more habitable to host an event, nicer hills with possibly less traffic, way better for a summer event. (it would be hard to try and cram in a last minute event by winter).
Thats my reason for that. besides that I'll help as much as needed 4 sure.
If we do it up north there's a good chance we can find camp to hold all of us and then instead of being at a dank hotel which cost a fortune and has security we could party at night bonfire status without worrying about security and "watching what were doing".

resistance from the town? I don't see paperwork as resistance it's just making sure we do this thing right.
and I don't agree with what you say about better scenery and better hills.
it's different scenery and different hills (which may be good hills as well) but imo south mountain has to be one of the most fun runs in az and if we do it right, that road was built for a race
less traffic? do you understand the point of paperwork? we'd reserve the road, there would be no traffic
have you skated south mountain? if you haven't yet you need, you'll understand why I want a race on it so bad

Trust me I know what it's going to take to throw an event and even though you file paperwork. doesn't mean the town is going to allow it. From what I've seen so far, police and township laws/ordinances are way more strict in the valley than they are outside because there's more to worry about and regulate.
If we do it north we may be able to pay for park rangers to regulate traffic rather than police, which I imagine would be less $, permits may cost less since It could be a less populated area that makes less money so things may cost less.
Hay may be more prevalent closer, costing less in shipment, buying locally if we can find it.
All things meaning The cost may be less, making it an easier goal to obtain with better awards/insentive for more skaters to come from a further distance with less registration fees. Not to mention if it is a summer event, possibly a difference of 10-30 degrees.
I haven't skated south mountain yet and yes I would love to see what you see and shred the hell out of it.
I have traveled up north though, I've been to the highest moutain (san fransisco peaks/humphry's peak) Arizona has to offer and checked out those roads. I'm down to drive up there with you and scope out locations for consideration and you can see what I see up there.
None the less I'm down to help with an event. This is just a suggestion not an ultimatum on my participation in organizing it. Either way I just wanna spread the stoke and ride.

Hopefully Mike from Nac will post up in here. He's got experience with hosting/throwing legal races so he can help out on the paperwork/logistics side. As this moves forward let me/sundaeskates know how we can help. We'd love to see some legit Downhill in the South West.

South Mountain would be EPIC... They already do silent sudays for the public, and thats free of charge for the public.. If we hosted a race there , I t would be easier to obtain permision and and some of the money can go to the parks and recreation to help upkeep and put a good taste in there mouth that we are not a bunch of punk skaters but dedicated enthusiasts that are seriuos about hosting a profesional organized event. Lets keep the money in the parks and recreational departments bank.. Isted of throwing money to the police and city who really dont care!!.. I will participate anyway I can.

Already tried it last year. Got bitched at for about in hour on the phone with threats of charges , arrest to me , exct. Soooooo we did sickamore as a back up hill. Good luck with this guys , but im telling you if you want to do this you will have to go to council meetings and try to pitch it to them and IF they do accept it your months away form the race being tangible
Thanks cole! And that why you are the man we will bounce ideas off of.
SoMo would be amazing to race....I just do not see it happening. Extremely expensive/hard to reserve. Think it's time everyone opens up google earth or hops in their cars and starts looking for an awesome race course. There's a hill in prescott that I've been dieing to check out...I might go scout it in the next couple weeks and let you guys know if it's worthy.

thanks for the post man, just letting everyone else on this thread know, that if this does end up happening, it probably won’t be until winter 2010. That doesn’t mean I’m giving up on the idea, I’m gonna work actively to get it to work, that’s probably just how long it will take

We need a race hill for this winter for sure, I’m down for a camping/scouting trip to find hills up north
ya its not impossible , just a far way out if we start now.I feel as tho we can find a road more tech and sweeter than Sicky somewhere near Payson in like a private community and if we do find one, ill go test ride with someone and see if its worthy; then we set a meeting with the home owners association with a powerpoint presentation, a legit waiver, and a big old smile. And then we prey for the best. Also we will include an oath that we will repay all damages and all profits will go to whereever they would like us to send them
