Hey everyone, I am a snowboarder looking for something to do in the summer. Been doing some research and had it nailed down to either Longboarding or Freebording. I decided to go with Freebording. I guess what I am looking for are good locations to Freebord. Hills or mini-hills, good garages. I'm assuming all the places Longboarders go.
Can someone tell me where some good locations are in Houston? Would you be opposed to a freeborder riding with you guys? I know Houston is not the best place for Freebording and maybe Longboarding because its so flat. I can make due though.
I'm new to the skate world. Not sure if there is a love/hate thing between different boarders.
People need to quit worrying (or even caring) about which company is cool, or core, or whatever label you want to pin on them. A lot of so-called "bro-brah" companies are run by assholes.
aww you fell for the gimick,,,,should have stuck with the tried and true...youll be buying a longboard soon enough though,,,especially if you find some longboarders to ride with, youll have to, to keep up...
side note, Houston is flat as flat can be,,,but you have epic garages down there...

Well I settled on freebording because its as close to snowboarding as I can get.
Are there any longboards out there that act like a snowboard? Can you longboard on flat land?

Sorry I cut it short last night, I was tired as hell. Anywho... whenever you get back to town, you should give me a shout if you wanna go out and test the waters.

in that case you got what you wanted. But a board set up for sliding kinda acts like a snowboard, but not like a freeboard. and longboarding on flats is probably more doable than on a freeboard. you can pump a longboard and keep moving forward without kicking for a long ways once you get the motion down. I dont think you can pump a freeboard can you?
The problem I see with the freeboard is that it causes you to snowboard incorrectly. when I snowbaord I carve like on my longboard. Gradually flowing onto my edge trasitioning to the other edge. the freeboard cause a slide then edge technique that is good for learing how to ride. and really good at taking the good snow down the mountain and pissing off all the skiers. IMHO a longboard is going to give you better crosstraing for really charging you snowboard. Big mountain style riding. if you are a jibber, a short board and skatpark is gonna be you best crosstraing.
I think the free board is good for people new to snowboarding and Im not saying there is anything wrong with it. just proper tools for the job is always the best.
one other thing I have heard you can charge any steepness of hill on a freeboard...you can on a longboard too, you just gotta know how..

i concur with this. i figure a sliding board to be closer to snowboarding than a freeboard. just me though.

What set up closely mimics a snowboard? I've done some research and it looks like a Lush Samba is pretty close. But I'm sure a certain board, with certain trucks, and certain wheels will be much better.
Any help on suggesting certain set ups will be greatly appreciated.

I understand what you're saying about wanting to get the same sort of feel as snowboarding during the off season, and I would agree that a good sliding set up would probably feel the closest, but longboarding is its own thing. Don't try to mimic snowboarding per se. Just go out and ride a few different boards and see what set up you really enjoy. You're welcome to come out and board with me and some friends and ride a couple of our boards. I might be going out tonight, but I will be gone from this monday till the next. PM me if you wanna come out tonight or some other night.

I think a good carve board would make you feel that snowboarding kinship. I don't agree that sliding is most like snowboarding. It is awesome, don't get me wrong, but if you like the floaty feeling of snowboarding as I do, I'd get a good carving board. I haven't rode them all but the gravity hyper carves, Arbor Pintail and Landyachts are awesome. Be sure to get soft wheels (less than 80a) and wide trucks (wider than 150) for the ultimate carving / floating / dern-near-snowboarding feel. But like the other feller said, longboarding is its own beautiful creature.
