I'm new to longboarding and skateboarding. Just looking for a group and places to learn. I'm in Roanoke, but work in Irving. I'm a total noob, but my son skateboards and asked me to learn so I can skate with him. I'm a bigger guy as well, but am working on losing some weight and hope to do it with diet and longboarding. Any advise or tips are welcome.

Crap, title should read DFW area longboarders.
Hey,
Its cool that you've picked up longboarding, especially so you can skate with your kid!
My friend lost about 50 pounds longboarding so its definitely doable. You should check out the Texas Baked crew, I think they're out of the Dallas area. Myspace.com/texasbaked I believe. Or you can just search TexasBaked and they should pop up. If you're ever in Austin you should come skate with us, just hit up a post on Austinlongboardclub.com
Goodluck and have fun!
whats up buddy. Im from Arlington and me and my crew skate all over DFW. We do a lot of garages around Dallas and Las Colinas, and bomb hills all over the metroplex. Most weekends we just have some urban cruises through downtown dallas and go have lunch, sit and have a beer, or whatever. Our buddy Mark from Texas Longboards - Longboard Skateboard Store lives right on the katy trail so most of the time we start around there and skate the 6 miles or so down to the AAC, then through dallas and back again later. its definitely a cool ride. the trail is good for riders of all experience levels. Like TheRosen said, the Texas Baked guys are located in and around Ft. Worth. They are all really chill guys but they mainly focus on 40+ mph runs. Thats pretty much what we are into as well, we just get out and about and do a lot more than just DH i think a little more than they do. We do a ton of fast DH, but like to cruise around with a bunch of people and just chill out every so often too.
Beware!!!
stay away from longboarding it is highly addictive
I too started longboarding at a more mature age. But I'm having blast and I keep getting better ( I would not actually say I good though) I' ve probably got more advice and tips than you want to hear. But I feel most important first thing to learn is to tuck. Riding low is necessary, because helps with stability at higher speeds and sets you up for sliding . Also, you look and feel more confident on the board. Learn to turm wit style and power, which will become pumping and carving. Sliding is also an imperative skill to learn, because it is te most effective way to stop. Don't be embarrassed to where pads, and when some yahoo yells "do a (insert trick name)" you yell back "tricks are for kids!"
I'm not really local, but semi close, I live near White Rock Lake in Dallas If you want to skate or more dubious advice. P.M. me
Thanks for all the words of encouragement and advice. I've started practicing in private...not ready to fall in front of people yet. LOL! I'd like to get a little more seasoned before venturing out with a group, but when I feel ready I will definently be give you guys a shout. I only say that because i would hate to go out now and slow you guys down. My son wants to get a longboard now and try his hand at sliding and of course I'm sure he'll be a natural at it!

man dont worry about slowing us down. you should have seen me the first time i ventured out in public. i fell on my face right in front of a large family walking at River Legacy Park in arlington. that was definitely NOT the best place to learn to push and whatnot. large cracks =/= good learning terrain.
I'm an old fart and I'm in Fort Worth and spend ALOT of time skating alone in the parking garages downtown. I am always looking for someone to skate with - so anybody who wants to come out should let me know!
xsentrick,
I hear you, focus on basics like speed and turning, find you center, think about style and have fun. Also, you should also consider sliding, It's a necessary skill to learn and its loads o' fun. Most riders on this site welcome newcomers to the world of longboarding, and really don't care about what skill level you're.skating.
Everyone!
I'm another lone skater geezerin DFW. I'm always ready for a parking garage, ditch or hill slide. I know a few spots,so if your in dallas give me a holler or if I go west I'll give you a yell.
