Re: houston folks
Any suggestions for a quiet place with mellow 'downhill' that a newb can learn on? Preferably someplace with low traffic(pedestrians or otherwise) so they can't see me assify myself.
I'm by Memorial Park. Been pushing around the neighborhood and around the fruit loop to get comfortable with the boards but don't have the ballz yet to hit the garages.
Thanks,
Nels

Check it although you said no garages there is a garage where i learned to ride at that is great PM me for details im not big on posting exact locations publicly
also you not going to find much aside from garage so just go to edwads and start halfway down the ramp if you have to carve back and forth to cut your speed and for god sakes if you get wobbles move your weight to the front more lol but this is how i learned
not too many rolling hills in houston lol
oh and make sure you have some slide gloves not only do they allow you to slide but learning to slide early on allows you to emergency stop better
edit: hit one of the HGR guys up and we will take you on a mellow practice run and its good to hang with competent riders, they show you the ropes and have been in your position. But mainly being there and seeing it done first hand then getting an explanation first hand sure did help me alot. dont be scared of the garages many of them have the option of down-flat-down-flat and you go the other direction and its all downs

Re: houston folks
Terry Hershey Park has a nice hike/bike trail with some mellow ups and downs. It's probably 10 minutes from you.. start at the parking lot closer to the beltway, better stuff on that side of the park.
Oh, and if you go by Memorial Herman hospital at night there's some nice slow spots.. just go to the lowes parking lot next door and skate through it and into the back alleys behind those uh, parking garages right there... lol, they have gates and are closed at night but you can easily hop the gate.. very small, very slow.. slow enough to stop before you plummet headlong into the closed gate. Not a hot spot just one I found when stuck on that side of town the other night
I wanna go skate tonight but i think i'm too sore.

Good spot too but be careful we have clocked most of those hills at 15-22 mph and its a tight fit with bikes on the trail just be careful if you do hit it up. i would say its easy but i would also say its not completely "mellow" at least if your claiming NOOBdom

Re: houston folks
about slide gloves. i've been longboarding for a little over a year, and i've never used a pair(or seen them). but i can still do slides, but i don't really know how well i'm doing them. i don't have anybody to compare myself to or put me in my place. im hoping to get some. i was also thinking of making gloves, but im just not very confident in my DIY skills. i've looked around for instructions on how to make slide gloves but i don't feel like a cutting board velcroed to my hands are the best way to go about this. are there alternative designs in gloves?

damn im answering everyone on here lol
I make mine by purchasing manufactured pucks, im currently in the market for some dark speed pucks
and buy a set of gloves with velcro or adjustable wrists then use contact cement and glue heavy duty velcro to the palms fingers etc and use the regular pucks i spend about 15 to 20 on decent gloves and another 8-10 on 5 gloves worth of velcro

Re: houston folks
Nice!! Replacement plucks are a great idea. I didn't think of that one. I'm not exactly where to get some good velcro so I'll probably end up glueing it on. Thanks!! I've also been meaning to check out Carves. It's a bit of a drive for me. Maybe I'll see some of you there

Re: houston folks
Velcro? walmart fabric section
use the glue to glue the velcro on if anything... you'll thank yourself
the position of the puck in your hand is something you'll definitely want to be able to adjust

Re: houston folks
There's actually a badass hill off 59N on Hamblen Road. steepest natural hill i've riden around here, but it's VERY short. like 10 seconds, lol.. 20 maybe. Lame. But almost worth the drive due to the lack of other hills to ride.. and it's close to my favorite HOV lane spot.

Re: houston folks
i'm sorry you didn't like tomball. but its the closest thing ive found around here. i usually ride outside the park. theres a gas station on the road by the park and if you turn off there, there are a ton of mobile homes. the main road is pretty steep right there.

NO!
Haha, I've been making gloves since I started skating, no sewing. Use apoxy. Make sure you get the kind that sets in 5 mins, not 90 seconds haha.
if you come kick it with me we'll make you a pair.
How I usually make them:
Materials
Gloves from Lowes or Home Depot
Cutting board
JigSaw
Apoxy (Locktight - 5 min)
Toothpics
sandwich bag
Velcro
scissors
sharpie
sheet 'o paper
Okay, basically, trace one hand on the piece of paper, and use that guide to determine where you want your pucks. (spit finger/fingerless/solid fingers)
Then cut out the pucks you've sketched. and trace them onto the cutting board and the velcro.
Cut out the velcro and the cutting board.
Mix the apoxy on the sandwich bag so it wont go everywhere. mix it and spread it on the back of the velcro with the toothpick, then slam that #### on your gloves, let it dry (pu the fuzzy side on the gloves.)
Then place the other part of the velcro on the pucks and BLAMO! GLOVES!
and that is my shitty description.
I promise you I make badass gloves, but just didn't want to type it out fully.
