Default WoodWorkers Luge

My dad is a wood worker and I really want to get into luging so I was wondering if you guys know of any inexpensive good beginer luges that could be made with easy to find materials and basic wood working machinery, no metal machinging tools...

With my b-day coming up in a few months I am thinking that Ill ask my parents for a luge, my dad will help me make a deck and pay for components like some randal R2B's, bearings, wheels etc...

So any ideas? At first I was thinking I'd go with a buttboard but I want something that can really tear up the hills! And with my B-day also bringing me a license (and I already have a car) driving to the bottom and walking up the run with a heavy luge is a possibility (better then walking from my house with it!)...

So what do you guys think? Whats the arguement with pegs or no pegs? I just want a stable ride with a little more length and stability then a buttboard but something near the smaller (perhaps it can be disassembled and assembled?) and lighter spectrum of street luges...

Also I was thinking low duro flashbacks for wheels? Like 78a...

So yeah 78a flashbacks, R2B trucks, back flipped... I just need a good luge design that is not to hard to do (something he could do in a few weekends would be killer!).

i never said I had a nice car and I think there is a pretty huge difference... one would be the cost of rolling hardwaer (I'd probably start by using wheels and bearings I already have) so thats like $75's... And then most of the wood we would have but maybe it would be another $50's worth of parts and then jst time. There is a huge difference between that and what $800's? I definetly would love one though!

I have seen that one and I will look into it for ideas but im not feeling the look (not that that matters a lot) but most pics it has 4 trucks on it....

How helpful is the 101 street luge book for building? I am going to pic that up, show my dad some pics and see what he thinks but I just want to get a bunch of plans and combine them for a killer setup!

One question, if I go with the route of buildign it to my body where should I place the trucks relative to my body and also if I do a leg support that looks like a peg (instead of just a wide extension), where should my legs be supported?

Lastly I am not going to be racing sometimes I may be with another rider but we wont be to close (he speedboards) so should I go with pegs? Again I dont want this to be super long so I am thinking I'd be fine with a pegless...

If you just want something to mess around on, just experiment yourself - i would try to go for a wide, well padded design for comfort.

I don't get why people go pegless - whats the deal with it? is it looked down upon or something? It seems like it adds a crapload of comfort for virtually no drawlback that i can see.

I heard it has something to do with racing... They are dangerous or something when racing but I wont be...

Yeah just for fun high speed riding thats all... So any ideas?

I like this one but I think I heard the handles are not that great? EDIT:File wont fit but its a modified version of this (http://lugeforce.tripod.com.) plans are made by Team Zox Racing Seems nice because its completly planned no need to change to much except maybe add some padding and some changes to the handles (any ideas?). Plus its dropped and I could either do it like it is (pegged) or shorten them and use them as calf supports...

Also to start can I use skate shoes or should I get those pads for your shoes right away?

Sorry to double post but the last post is already pretty long...

Here is my idea...

Follow those plans except do I really need a bumper? Could I just round the front a bit? I wont be racing or doing anything to wild...

Also I am going to use bike pegs for my foot pegs...

The plans say a bit about sizing of the parts does it look right? But nothing about truck placement...?!?!?!

Also to make it more portable I am thinking Ill put a hinge on the front wood section in front of the trucks so its only holding my leg weight not my body weight... Then I will use like a support box (bottom and two sides, not sure what the proper term is) to keep it from being able to open and close when riding... It would support it on the bottom and on the sides, would be real solid especially with not that much weight on it...

Oh and any special woods I should use? I'd hate to have this thing crack on me!!!

I am picking up Lott's book tonight but with e-mails he seems to think buttboard is the way to go for me... I really want the added stability and comfort of a luge and I want to give a pegged luge a try :/

He also says the design I chose is very unsafe in that its a wood version of what should be made of metal...

So I am thinking maybe Ill combine a wider body support section (like a gumball machine etc...) and then a 2 by 4 though for the boom and pegs?

IDK I think Ill just pick up the book and talk with my dad (the builder) about it tonight... He is pretty good at coming up with killer ideas!

Take plywood, and make a sled that fits you. Have a 45" wheelbase, front trucks at mid-thigh level, leg support up to the edge on your inner knee (basically just lay down and trace). Don't make it too narrow, or you'll lose support. Make sure you can stand up on the middle with boards underneath where the trucks go (if you're scared to do this, it's not strong enough). Once you build it, push yourself at a slow speed and try to turn. This will let you know whether you have wheelbite before you're doing speeds that through you off the board when this happens. You are your own test pilot. If you want plans, build a gumball machine and just use 2 trucks instead of 4.

Thanks for the info on the wheelbase and truck mounting... I showed my dad some plans and he thinks he can make a killer hybrid. Aluminum reinforced wood (metal supports)...

I am going with a sort-of rail design and pegs now I just like the idea, although I saw an all wood design like you are talking about on Lott's site... I would just prefer the comfort of a rail and foot peg. Then later on I can try a pegless...

Thanks guys keep any other tips coming but I think I got a spark started in my dads engineering genes!

I highly recommend for all wood streetluge designers...

http://www.woodnshop.com/hardwood/Ba...ch_Plywood.htm

The 13-ply 3/4 inch baltic birch is MUCH stronger then the 7-ply 3/4 inch you get at hardware stores. It's very smooth, and they've never sent me a single knot in the wood. The wood shop will cut it to the size you need as well.

A few questions I think my dad can design a killer luge but setup... 44" wheelbase you all think? What type and angle trucks (reverse kingpin like randall 50 or bear 57... or some sort of conventional truck?)? What width?

Wheel size, duro and type?

Any more info on truck placement?

Thanks...

Also if you could have a metal worker make ONE part for a hybrid metal/wood luge, what would it be?
