So, I'm pretty new to luging. The other day I decided to test out the luge I built (which rides sweet I might add!), which has trackers and 83mm flywheels on it. So I'm rolling down this hill, takin' it slow because I've never really luged much before. My GPS said I was goin' 35mph when I noticed a gnarly burnt oil smell, as well as a humming noise that seemed to increase in pitch as I increased in speed. . . It kinda psyched me out a bit. For all I know this may be normal, it's just that maybe you don't experience these same sounds on a speedboard because your ears are alot farther away from the wheels. So, anyone else notice this?
That sounds crazy scary dude. I would've been scared out of my mind if I was in your situation. Let's wait for a lugers reply, because I'm curious as to what the problem could be as well.

Things definately sound different.
But the only time i ever smelt anything was when my own bad maintenance had killed my bearings and the front wheels were melting, and you'd know it if that happened...
Are you sure the smell was coming from your ride?
I'd probably still advise new bearings though.

i get that humming sound on my board sometimes when im doing over 35, i 'think' its beacause my axel scratched on the ground once when my wheel fell off

Well, the bearings are relatively new and in good shape. In fact, I think they still have some of the factory lube still in there, possibly I could be smelling the excess lube burning off? though I don't think that's completely logical. Also, maybe the heat vents in the flywheels have a wiffle ball effect and are making the slight humming noise? I'm not sure. I'll go and double check everything just to be safe.
Also, just curious, I've been having some problems getting good visibiliety with my fullface on in my luging position. I can see well enough untill I completely relaxe, because my chest pushes the chin portion of the fullface helmet up into my line of sight. any tips? Right now I just get around it my holding my head up high.
being chased by park security bob?
heh, just kidding
I've smelled burning rubber... never had the smell of burning oil come by me though.
As for your helmet situation, try keeping your head up for now, or wear the helmet tilted forward which should counteract a little bit of your chest-push, but if you're really serious about getting into luge do try to look for a wedge helmet (polaris, indy, bell, snoridr, etc) as they allow PERFECT field of vision down the chin
ride safe!

Are you sure the oil smell wasn't just a smell from your surroundings?
Did you go on any other hill and notice this?

Yeahs, it's deffinetly not the hill/surroundings. I'll check my bearings again in the morning, and make sure that I didn't have anything dragging off my body. You never know, maybe something was hangin' off me and dragging. but I didn't really notice it until I accelerated to about 35+.

I don't think I've EVER smelt burning oil on my luge. (Roland might have though)
I seriously doubt it was from your bearings.
A humming sound is probably not good. It could be from a flat spot in your wheel or something. One I heard a sound like that, it wasn't much of a humming sound, a little more like a knocking. Turns out a piece of tape was stuck to the wheel. The only other time I've heard it, it was really high pitched. Turns out I melted the core.
If your bearings are all good, and the wheels are all good, I wouldn't worry too much about it. But I would keep track of your wheels, could be an air bubble in the wheel.
... possibly I could be smelling the excess lube burning off? though I don't think that's completely logical.
Did you run over dog poo?
I dunno what your bearings are lubed with, but for the thin oils people usually use, it'd have to be so hot that you would have melted your wheel cores.
Do double-check (as you suggested) that nothing's dragging on the ground or touching the wheels. Check the wheels for abnormal wear and break down and rebuild your bearings if you haven't already.
Next time you smell it, stop really quick and see if you can locate the source. It's definitely spooky and I'd fix whatever the cause is.
Another vote for "not the lubricant"....The RPM's our bearings see while skating/luging are NOTHING compared to the RPM's of the same/ similar bearings in any number of machine designs.
