Hi there. Im building my first luge, an 8 wheeled Gumball machine (or at least something very similar based on one) and am trying to decide what wheels to take. My prime choices at the moment are:
BigZigs in 77a or 80a
Gumballs in 75a
Avillas in 75a
any other wheel you suggest
My main focus is grip then speed and I will be using them on excellent to crappy surfaces. Not really intending to slide/drift with the luge. I have heard the BigZigs in 77a are regarded as too soft especially in higher temps? Anybody got any experiance with them? Any suggestions and tips on wheel choice are welcome. I might add that with 125 pounds im pretty light.
Avillas are garbage on a gumball machine; from 72a up to 84a………I have tried them all. I weigh 100kgs / 220lbs and they all want to drift uncontrollably once you go over 80km/h – 50mph.
Gumballs are the wheel for that luge style as Lott did build it around their road handling qualities. They work very well and are best in 75a for luge……especially the reflex thane ones if you can obtain any, in pink or lime.
The pink Big-zigs are also excellent; 77a is fantastic for sure grip! I ride in North Queensland, Australia and the heat from the roads melt all the duro wheels up here. Pinks still grip the surest, and I am quite heavy compared to you, so they will work even better for you than me.
The 83mm 75a flywheel is also a excellent choice for luge, but Gummies are my choice for Lott’s luge.

Well the board was designed for gumballs. For max grip I'd suggest pinks big zigs.
I think you'll have a hard time sliding that board on anything (well maybe cherries)
I wouldn't go with 97s, who wants to spend $200 for wheels for their board? Besides unless you've drilled it properly 97's may be too large.
Go with either the gumballs or the big zigs pink. 83s might be a good alternative, but why not run with the wheels it was designed for (and the pink zigs make a fine gumball replacement)
I've been playing around with my wheel collection and I like the feel of a 75ish offset.
so far ive gone as hard as 88a without drift.
Most of my weight is redirected to the front of my pan in a technical turn and i grab my luge waaay back like Chris McBride or atleast I try .
When The weather permits i want to practice on a set of 4 Orange Bigzigs with 2 Lime BigZigs at the rear for controlled drifting, its the thane and duro i trust the most and i dont see my self over-drifting with this...whats the actual term when the luge goes perpendicular to the direction of the slope?
Anyway, Im stoked on 2008, new fairings (i dont care if it doesnt actually help it looks really cool) new wheels, new trucks, Randal is back in ''service''
TEAM STREET-MISSILE just keeps getting bigger every year.
wish there were more Nor-Am races...
Thanks for all the replies guys. Ill see if I can get a set Gumballs with the reflex thane - didnt know those even existed (anyone know a mail order that ships them internationally?), other wise ill go for the pink bigzigs.

AJ what sort of wheight distribtuion do you have? Do you want to intenionally slide it?
Usually front /back, 60 /40
but i grab my handles way up front to intentialy slide through hairpins at 50-60kph and it teaches me to control the drift. but hard wheels are fast and i wanna learn on wheels harder than the usual 78a

I've never been a fan of the old school way of riding, which is to throw the board into a "controlled" slide through the turn. A few of the old school riders swear by this method, and I know at least one that doesn't think its the best, but it was how he learned.
My take on it, is a slide is killing speed. And you don't have a lot of control over it. Instead, kill your speed by braking, then dive through the turn. But then again go out and experiment!
