I built my friends buttboards out of 3/4 inch ply wood with Randal R2 180 mm trucks. They are standard 48 in by 12 in. This weekend they hit 60 mph on a sweet run in north Georgia. One thing I was wondering, what are you guy's top speeds on a buttboard. Obviously they are not as stable as a luge. One of my friends was getting small wobbles at 60 mph so he braked. Hit trucks are really loose, so that may be part of it. What do you think is a "safe" top speed on a buttboard? I know a lot has to do with rider skill.
I'd say the "safe" top speed is relative to the rider. How comfortable you are with the equipment determines how fast you can go without getting scared (the cause of most wobbles).
I'm sure there are people out there who can ride a given hill faster on a buttboard than someone else can on the same hill with an RBros luge.
oh lol sorry read it kinda fast. then id say 10 to 20 but it does all depend on the persons limits
HAHAHHAHA
yeah, I'd never take a buttboard above 20...
IIRC, Darren Lott's taken them into the 70's just fine... I think you're going to bottom out on finding fast enough hills before you have real equipment failure. They're pretty fantastic toys...

I've been over 70 on my buttboard. I run my trucks pretty loose but I never considered a buttboard to be not as stable as a luge.
He may need to reposition himself on the board, and tighten his trucks up.
BUT ease into the high speeds. You don't need to go 70 mph on the first run.
We have slowly been increasing our top speeds. I spend most of my time on standup, so I've only been about 50 mph on a buttboard. I find a buttboard incredibly stable compared to standup. My friends have been 60 mph (GPS verfied) on theirs. That's great to hear some people have been 70 mph. I think we are going to have trouble finding roads that are any faster. 8% grade seems to be the highest sustained slope around here. On standup I've only reached about 55 mph. It was taken with a chase car, so I'm not sure how accurate it is. Maybe when I'm riding with other standup riders at the Blue Ridge Freeride I'll be able to draft faster!
I'm riding a Darren Lott Classic with Randal R2B's. The board hasn't changed much in the last 5 years.
Probably the fastest I've ever been is at Dinosaur Point. The road is about 3 miles with about a 6% grade. Ive hit about 70 on my buttboard and 75 on my luge.
