You're going about this all wrong. Learning to footbreak is important and can't throw footbraking out the window for something else. Practice footbreaking. Then when you have that down, practice groundslides, then standers after that if you'd please. It's just you never know when you're gonna accidentally end up going faster than you'd like and won't be able to standup slide to a stop. Ground slides are a hell of a lot more reliable to for stopping at speed. Standies, they are more of a slow speed stop and style move than a really reliable safety move.

A longboard is a skateboard in the same way a MILF is still a mother.

So, that leaves me with 1 option. Learning to slide.
Glove assisted slides dont appeal to me much so I want to learn stand up slides. Will that be harder?
What should I practice today?
Thanks guys.

Re: I need to learn how to slide.
this might sound like a stupid question but i push mongo style, would the foot i use to break still be my back foot or would i use my front as if i'm trying to push. I have tried to footbrake but with little success so just looking for more answers, Thanks

Mongo footbreaking is bad, when you take your front foot off the board you are putting all your weight onto the back of your board and rear trucks and there is a good chance you will wobble out, I learned the hard way when I was just starting. Learn it with your back foot on the pavement. I my front foot sometimes but while grabbing the board as well ( Brazilian style I think) works well I have never had an issue with speed wobbles while grabbing. In general, I find just using my back foot more comfortable, but if im hauling serious ass into a corner and want to footbreak I still use the Brazilian style. Im more confident this way at high speeds into corners

Re: I need to learn how to slide.
Im curious as to what wheels your rocking. I mean if youve got an original complete with seismic hotspots and s8s i would see why your having trouble. Equipment helps.
But keep your weight low, and look towards where your turning to. That applys to all slides, standup or otherwise.
Everytime people mention that they have problems with footbraking i think that they are trolling. You should definetly learn how to do both. When i do DH, my main method of stopping is a handsdown toeside slide.

I push mongo also. I would use my front foot, but then again iv never foot braked at high speed. i just slide out with gloves. foot braking is a very awkward thing if you think about. standing up straight with just one foot on the board.

I know exactly what turns that I got speed wobbles on and could not stop them, going on the straight a ways was easy but sped me up so that I was going fast as hell. I loved it! The question is: The coleman slides and other stopping slides that you guys talked about, how far in advanced should I start them when I am getting towards the end? Also, what is the best method for controlling speed wobbles at high speed during a curve in the road?
The best way to avoid speed wobble is to focus and not panicking when you feel it. The main reason people fall is because they overcompensate by pushing the other way. Besides that, introducing your own play in the trucks (i.e. carving) can prevent speed wobbles. Beyond this, you can always improve your gear with decent rkp trucks or jimz bushings

haha dude, just reading this completely sketches me out. You shouldn't be going faster than you feel comfortable stopping. Of course, you need to push yourself a little to progress, but dont completely overestimate your skills. Good thing you're wearing proper safety gear though. You won't regret it. In regards to your question asking how much room you should leave for yourself, only you can really tell that because you're the only one that rides the road. Be conservative, and leave as much space as you see is necessary.

Re: I need to learn how to slide.
I do need harder bushings. I will have to look into trucks. I have the gravity carve 39, I like it a lot! I am comfy on it, and yes the trucks could be tighter than I have them, as you said "introducing your own play in the trucks.", is awesome advise. The trucks were definitely too lose for the hill. I had been cruising streets earlier that night, ones that had a gradual decline that slowly picked up speed, they were easier to carve on, and they were great practice for making tighter turns from one street to another with ease. That hill gave me a what for and all the same made it easier to understand what you guys are suggesting. With all this awesome advice I will be taking that hill again in no time. There is one street up from it that drops and has one curve after another. I plan on taking it before I leave Okinawa. With you guys teaching and passing your wisdom, we newbies are well on our way. Thanks!

LOL! My bestie was on her quads, lol, when we took that hill @ 0230 am. I am really thankful for all of the training I get as a roller derby girl for falling at high speeds. It helped me bail good enough and prevented any bad injuries. I get the same rash and bruises from the rink, lol, I am use to it. I overestimated that hill period. It was still fun! Well, after the last curve, there is a nice long straight away that would be a good place to start, it's not so down hill as the rest of the road. Come to think of it, it would be a good spot to learn my slides and stopping too . Thanks man!

Not sure if you are asking me? If you are, they gravity burners 74a, just soft cruise wheels, but I am crazy, lol. I plan on buying harder wheels this weekend along with gloves. I have been researching wheels but not sure which ones to go for. I see the sliders on Gravity Flow what looks to be riding on 98a's or so, they look hard. I don't have much of an option because we have only so many options here in Okinawa. Two options are Powell Peralta and Sector 9 wheels. I am not ready to change out the ABEC5's for Bones just yet. What do you suggest?
I already skate a via other methods, often, and it has helped learning to ride my board so much easier. I figured out the stay low thing fast and why I should from recalling different dvd's I have watched at the skate shop that I work in. I realized really fast that watching all of you really good one's move and so on is very vital to what you are doing. Yeah, there are tricks to be learned to look special, lol, but I can definitely feel the difference it makes to stand or get low and all else. I am still super new but catching on easily so far. What I am learning from you guys on here is helping me more than you know. I am down for learning anything you have to throw at me and thankful for it!

OKay! Guys I practiced lots of foot slides for stopping tonight with friends that can do them. They were super simple because of the "how to's" you guys provided. You are all awesomeness!

Re: I need to learn how to slide.
Gotta love 2 year old threads. I bought myself a helmet & went off trying Coleman's for the first time ever yesterday. I had never slid nor attempted to slide before. I'm slowly starting to get the stance down, having problems keeping my right knee down. I think a lot of it was that I was doing it on a short tiny little hill, hardly much speed at all. Still kind of sketchy to do on a bigger one though. I managed to get tiny little slides in, after my little slide I'd just do a foot break. By the time I was done, I had tons of streaks on the pavement. Of what you ask? Oh no, not urethane, but instead streaks of the color of my new shoes...
