Default pendy's - trust me i've read and practiced

ok... I have an evo and lime big zigs, I weigh 230 and stand at about 6" even. For the life of me I can't slide the board safely. I've been at this for awhile, or at least about 2(two) months of this about 3 days a week. Today I was working on pendy's and colemans and I lightly sprained my ankle on a pendy and when doing a coleman smashed my helmet so hard that it cracked the hard foam. I have read the tutorials, watched the movies, and attempted my best to emulate the form. I have tried slow, and fast. I have tried easing into it, and throwing it really hard.

when I ease into it, the board never slides. When I throw it hard, like all day today, the board gives, but only for a split second the it catches and I high side. either trying to run out the speed or trying to tumble, when it's a coleman (running backwards is hard). I have some Durians on the way, to help with the learning curve... but all the reviews said the evo was easy to slide and the lime big zigs would slide really easily when the rider wanted and grip when the rider didn't.

I'm just super frustrated. I'm just not quite ready to give up. PLEASE HELP!!!!

    What trucks are you using?
Evos drift really well.....at DH speeds. IMO it's easier to slide that board with more balanced truck angles front and rear. Bear Grizzly 40* front and 52* rear, or Randal 35* front, 50* rear.
If you've got a front that out-turns your back by more than that, in conjunction with grippy wheels like Lime BigZigs, your looking at some pretty good grip. When it does break free, it's pretty violent to an inexperienced rider. And if you are going too slow/don't have your board or body positioned strategically, you WILL highside.
Also try putting more weight on your hand...less on the board, if you can.

hope I didn't come off sounding like a douche or something. I mean no disrespect whatsoever.

I'm running bear grizzlies, in the stock positions... i guess it's 52/52, but the board compensates for the angles I thought.

I'm trying to slide at a decent clip. I'm not about to try throwing this at 30-40mph but i'm significantly faster than a jogging speed. I'm attempting to throw it on a hill after i've built up some speed. Additionally I'm not at the bottom of the hill, but still on the slope which I thought would help me slide more.

I've been at this for about 2-3 months, with practice about 2-3 days a week for about 2 hours a day.

I was hoping to see more progress by now and less cracked helmets.

having a lower angle truck in the back means it turns less, meaning it will be harder to slide it out.

not sure what to tell you, if you ride the board backwards you'll probably fishtail all over the place, you should be able to initiate the slide easily that way, but it will be really weird.

and i'm sure you've heard it all before, more weight on your glove hand(s), commit to it (if you leaning enough on your gloves your feet will probably slip off the board before highsiding), more weight on the front foot/kick out the back (for colemans), for toesides more or less dive forward onto your hands and kickout your feet (sounds scary but works), practice of course, and if you know any one who can slide they can probably help you a good bit. we cant give very detailed/helpful advice over the net.

always, always, always... i pad up and wear a helmet. I i've been trying to keep my arm as close to my body when i'm trying the pendy's. It won't turn without being close. Keeping my back arm off of my board really helps when trying the slide. When I really swing my arm across my body, that's how the slides initiate.

The catch seems to be that when I"m doing this, I get stuck at about 90 degress, and highside...

I wish I could go the full 180. You think the Durians will help with the learning curve?

Sounds like you are either not going fast enough or you are not unweighting (is that a word? lol) your deck enough. Sometimes all it takes is confidence, speed and will power. Even the wheels you have now should slide fine, but sliding Durians is like loosing your virginity. It is so nice. They grip though, don't get me wrong, but they slide very smooth. When I got my Stimulus I couldn't slide well on my sticky wheels and I tried a Coleman in the parking lot of the store and it slid right out. But now that I know how to do it, I can put the sticky wheels back on and slide them just as easy. I may need a little more speed but I can 180 at pushing speed on my sticky wheels no prob now. I think it is more technique than duro, but you need the confidence the Otangs will give you to help you see that.

I don't think he was serious lol. I have seen fat dudes slide. Like I said, it's all technique. When you get it and realize what you needed to do, you will facepalm for sure. I got lucky and had a really experienced rider who races teach me one afternoon. He had me make 2 tiny changes in what I was already doing and BAM it just happened so easy. I did it and was so stoked that I fell anyway lol.

seeing as how no one else is going to say it...

big zigs are some of the grippiest race wheels known to skaters.

while its totally possible to slide a big zig, (like any other wheel) its probably not the best wheel to learn how to slide on.

if you can afford it, try getting some 0-tang freerides, retro free rides, kryptonics or mini hawgs (basically any wheel with a smaller contact patch and rounded edges)

even buy them used if you can, used wheels will slide better than new ones.

but dont interpret this as you need to get new wheels to learn how to slide.

i learned how to slide on 3dm white avilas, and it took me like a month to do it.

if you have access to a street deck, hit that up too. they slide very easily and it will help with learning the right motions.

^^^^ Yes. Although technically you CAN slide any wheel, you need to actually know how to slide in order to do it! And learning to slide on grippy wheels like Zigs can be a bit tricky. Your best bet is to start with a round lipped wheel in the 78a to 83a range. If you have some Durians on the way you'll be in better shape soon.

If you ever want to journey out to Jersey for some slide pointers, I have a decent hill that's low traffic and not super hard to find. I've taught a few people to slide there, and it's where I go when I want to work on a new slide.

I'll tell you straight off that increasing speed will make this like 10 x easier. I didn't think I could slide my demonseed very much either until I attempted a coleman doing like 35. it was the easiest thing ever. you've got the pads for a reason man.

I seriously would try it with more speed. just build up to it. get comfortable at the speed, then add in going to drop knee, and then after you're comfortable with that incorporate in the coleman. speed ftw.

also, in all those race videos where you see guys doing colemans to predrift before a corner, those dudes are hauling. those slides are that much harder when going slower
