Learning to slide.
Before you say search button or something like that I'm looking for step by step directions on how to do a basic slide, I dont care about trick sliding necessarily. I'm looking to buy some freeride durians to learn on. I want to be able to grab the rail and come to a dead stop. I have two broken ribs so Im trying not to fall much, but im just trying to learn the easiest slide that will put me to a dead stop or close to it. (Looking for a good emergency stop basically and maybe the Coleman later) Im riding on a rayne healcat with 42degree randals and some pink big zigs currently but ill hopefully be buying limes eventually.

part of learning to slide is learning how to fall when you #### up trying to slide
if you have two broken ribs you better just take it easy

Re: Learning to slide.
You ask stupid questions. how many other people out there do you think just want to slide to stop? a lot.
sliding to stop is easy, you just slide out, pretty soon you stop.

Toeside are easier for a lot of people, since it's easier to get weight over your hands and get your hand farther from the board, increasing control and smoothness of the slide.
Alright, here's my toeside pendy walkthrough:
Start by throwing out the tail toeside, that's what your gloves are for (and maybe kneepads). Fall on them. I am 90* to the road before my hands touch down on the road. Slide initiated. Next I kick out my heelside, and bend my toeside knee. Next, I switch, and extend my toeside leg, then bring in my heelside foot. After that I put weight back onto the deck, and steer downhill to straighten out and stand up.
Ta da! The key is really committing to the slide, and how you just fall down onto your gloves.
Here's my best description for how to do a heelside pendy.
Step one, get as low and as far forward on your board as possible. While your instinct is to center yourself, this is in fact not what you want to be doing. Now that you are low, place your front hand in front of the front axle (but to the side, obviously). But FAR FORWARD. The far forward lean accomplishes a few things: one, when you lean that far forward, your weight comes all the way off the back, letting you slide out more easily; two, you actually swing down so you're right under your hand anyway, so you're not uncomfortable for long; and three, it causes you to fold your back leg over so you don't grab stinkbug. (though I don't grab at all)
So now that your hand is on the ground, you're a little off balance, bring that board around. You should have so little weight on it that it swings around like no big deal. bring it so it's pointing 30* away from straight downhill, with the tail pointed downhill.(imagine going 150* from pointing straight downhill, nose first) which is really only maybe a 90* slide, since you should be carving into the slide.
If you have trouble picturing it, I'll draw something up in MS paint.
So now your board is backwards (almost completely) and you've got your butt pretty much over your hand. Start doing a (switch) heelside turn from the ground, but mostly with your front foot (uphill, the wedged side). This should cause the front wheels to hook, and the back wheels to drift around rapidly and reset you on your merry way.

Even though I hate this guy, I have to agree with him. If you are hurt, sliding will make it worst. You put strain on your shoulder, and everything between the sternum and spine. You will need to heal well or you will regret it.
Shutdowns are pretty easy. The best way is to drag your hand as you turn real hard, lifting the weight off the board with your hand's friction just enough to break the board free, sliding the board perpendicular to your direction. Stream your hand to keep the board in line where you want it. Then, when it's time to get out of the slide, lean forward and push yourself up as you spin your board 90* either direction to luge up on your feet. I hate coming out of slides in switch.
While you are healing, get a toy car and practice the physics with that. Sounds stupid but if you know how something works, it makes it easier to operate. You are basically doing the same thing, just on a bigger, ride-able scale.

Re: Learning to slide.
Ideally you shouldn't be skating until you heal, buuut I was skating with 3 broken ribs a few months back, so I won't tell you not to skate. I will tell you to don't be stupid and try sliding with an injury like that. You WILL FALL, even if it is on your butt while you're going slow, and you will be shifting your weight in new ways. You will cause more harm to yourself than you will improve at sliding, and will likely get frustrated because you will be hurting yourself and not sliding right. Wait til you are healed, and you will be able to learn quicker, and you don't be endangering your health

Re: Learning to slide.
trust me... I'm learning to slide... that quote was taken from my thread... you will fall alot. take a break. or break your ribs more... I guess it's up to you. After serious slide sessions.. the next day (when I'm sore) I realize how much effort seems to come from the core. Broken ribs would make that really rough.

Re: Learning to slide.
Dude, bottom line........if you have broken ribs don't try sliding. Sliding is very strenuous and if you screw up you will hurt yourself and having a pre-existing injury, that fall may not be as simple as falling on your kneepads and sliding on them to a stop and trying it again.
