toe side speed checks
I can do heel side speed checks and f/s stand ups fairly well, but when it comes to a toe side speed check or b/s stand ups I'm kinda stuck. I know if I just dedicate myself to learning these tricks for a few hours in a parking lot, I can get them down, but I'm just wondering if anyone can give me some pointers, maybe help save me a road rash scab or two?

Put a hand down and turn too much.

Re: toe side speed checks
For toeside pre-drifts: pull the front of your deck one way with your hand grabbing rail and push the back of your deck the other with your back foot/toes. This creates a moment about the center of your board which lets it rotate - you want to rotate it so its sideways, hold it there to kill some speed, then do the opposite to bring it back and hook back up just as you enter the turn. Keep your eyes on the apex the whole time.
For backside standups: the two things that helped me learn these are a) carving into the slide, just as you would a frontside standup (heelside) and b) turning your shoulders so you face down the hill as you turn your legs/hips/lower body to do the opposite. If you can do heelside standups already, just think of the mechanics you do for those and do the same thing, only backside. Here's a good photo of Sakamoto getting steezy that helped me learn the shoulder thing:

Re: toe side speed checks
Mr. Krebhorn knows! Faster is always better. For a toeside predrift to actually work and be effective, you need to be coming into a corner with too much speed - turn it sideways, kill the speed, hook back up and rail that ####!

Re: toe side speed checks
Ok, I have a question about toeside predrift...I have been practicing toe-side pre-drifts at this sharp 90*. I've clocked it at around 35 before hitting the corner with my GPS. I will initiate the turn early, Kick out the back end, bring it back. I would be headed right for the apex. But every single time my front foot shifts forward. I lose all leverage over the board. It makes it slightly more difficult of a turn. I would definatly feel more uneasy if i was going faster.

Re: toe side speed checks
found an amazing video the loaded guys made that has tons of good sliding footage to study from. right around 2:10 loui p throws out 3 or 4 toe side speed checks, you can see he turns his shoulders downhill like bpz was talking about.. great stuff

went out after reading this in class and busted both a toe side predrift and b/s standy. thanks for that.

Re: toe side speed checks
Well what goes wrong when you do try? My toe side is still pretty crappy but I found when I put weight on my back leg to push out with helped... I still need to get my head up though >.<

Re: toe side speed checks
dude i dont know how. i was total pro at toeside standies when i started. all my friends suck at em. the pretty much just " lean toeside and kick the board a little.
YOU GOTTA FEEL YOUR BOARD. CARVE A FEW TIMES LEAN IN DEEP DEEP DEEP DEEP AND KEEP LEANING WHILE YOU KICK OUT THE BACK!
i guarantee youll highside a once in a while but trust me. once down so useful.

yeah dude. slides are hella easy going faster. specially predrifts and standies. unless your going 70mph. yeah dude. get some more speed. and lean further, i noticed to some people they listen to pilloni. "the less wieght you have on your hand the better, the more effective the predrift is"
i respectfully dissagree.
some people have different sliding methods. im not putting down someones style but to some its different and in videos you should throw in some variations so the watcher doesnt totally lose confidence knowing that theres only one way to do it right.
anyways for me. the more wieght i have on my hand the better but not too much more weight. and dont keep you foot horizontal on your board, dont keep it vertical. keep it at an angle. but of course some people may think differently. just keep watching your weight cuz the more on your board the easier it is to highside.
DONT GIVE UP. IF YOU KEEP TRYING YOULL EVENTUALLY REAP THE REWARDS!

yea ive met a few ppl who are more comfy with toe side slides/shut downs than a heelside or a coleman. baffles the #### outta me... toe side is much more scary, hah.
but ive been working on them and getting more confident thanks to another awesome thread on silverfish!!

Other way for me. I learned heelside by placing my back heel a couple inches off the board and rotating with the hips. Toeside I learned how to

so yeah, now im working on standup 180. woo
