Sliding is scary...
I have a loaded dervish, with otang in heat 83a
My wheels are broken in now, so i was trying some slides..
I thought this was gonna be really easy.. but when I tried it, the board threw me off my board really bad.
I do it at a crusiing speed, and I am really scared to do these.
I am trying stand up frontsides. I am practicing speed checks, but those also throw me off my board..
Anyone have tips, I am really scared when riding to attempt these slides

Re: Sliding is scary...
Wear pads and a helmet and go for it.
They won't be scary after you get the feel of them.
Keep your center of gravity low and behind the board when doing stand ups to avoid high siding.

Re: Sliding is scary...
Same thing happened with me, It felt unnatural to have the board slip out. What i did to get confortable--and trust me, I'm still sketchy doing standups--was going down the the skate park with a cheapy trick deck, and practicing slow speed power slides. That's the only advice i can give, that and just keep practicing one step at a time.

Re: Sliding is scary...
Crouch low when you do it and lean up hill. Both will feel weird but they compensate for the amount the board wants to throw you forward.

Re: Sliding is scary...
Get together with some other longboarders; not only can they give better advice than people who have never seen you skate, but just having experienced people around to advise you makes anything less scary. By the way, I don't intend that as a slam against the Fish or the people who replied, it's just that nothing beats seeing it in person.
If you can't hit bottom, wear the sides out.

Re: Sliding is scary...
Drop your knee. Learn hands-down slides first.

Re: Sliding is scary...
I really don't know why people try to learn standup slides on a longboard before hands down. Some people do so and turn out fine. But the hands down slides are easier. So try those first.

A longboard is a skateboard in the same way a MILF is still a mother.

Re: Sliding is scary...
Practice falling. In the grass, run around and practice tucking and rolling from a full speed sprint. Wear your pads, and realize that pain is only for a few days, while sliding in front of a bunch of people is forever (Or at least a few weeks.)

Re: Sliding is scary...
Slide on concrete that lead to straight into grass. That way, if you fall and get thrown off your board, you'll land in the grass and won't get hurt. =D

hands down slides are usually more useful for slowing down and stopping.

Re: Sliding is scary...
All the feelings you have are natural. Search the forum on this topic. If you are willing to search through the plethora of information, you will come across a number of useful threads. Believe me, it is all part of the process. Master the speed check slides. Then start practicing the full 180 stand up slides. You won't nail the first one but every failure gets you closer to the goal. The technique has been described in this very thread. Best of luck, you will get there.

Listen, and I mean listen. quote: stephen.mhsrider commit to that sh!t. if you don't commit then you WILL most likely eat #### or fail. My friend found out the hard way. Your Amigo Eddy Texas Outlaws. Keep sharing that knowledge brothers. Right ####### ON.
I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid. You're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world.. without you. A world without rules or controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible.

Re: Sliding is scary...
getting used to falling helped me with standups
gives you knowledge of knowing how falling feels, so you wouldn't have to worry about falling.
more confidence into the slides

Re: Sliding is scary...
iv been starting to slide and i find the hands down slides r easiest. I also switched out my lemon zigs for 97a wheels. they make it easier to slide and possible to do it at lower speeds. kneepads and gloves are a must.
