Stink Bugging a Coleman
Ok I said screw it after a couple months of never doing an actual slide so I grabbed my board and easily pulled off the slide.
My question is.. is it a bad idea to do a coleman while stink bugging to come to an emergency stop? All I've read is stink bugging causes wobbles. I'm only interested in pulling off colemans to use them as an emergency stop/slow anyway.

Re: Stink Bugging a Coleman
when i started offf doing colemans i was grabbing stink bug, i just had to get used to dropping my knee in before i could do real colemans. give it time, practice going from standing to the coleman position, but not actually doing the slides to get comfy with it. it'll come to you. if youre not going terribly fast stinkbug doesnt matter than much.

Re: Stink Bugging a Coleman
Stink Bugging is excellent when used as an emergency deterrent against predation. If you think you are about to be eaten, release the rancid odor.

Re: Stink Bugging a Coleman
the thing with stink bugging is it keeps your weight right over the center of the board. this greatly increases your risk of high siding and eating asphalt.
the key to a successful coleman is unweighting your board in the right spots. stink bugging makes it hard to do this.

I'm actually quite comfortable with moving around and squatting on my board. I can get the stance perfect just never actually do a legitimate coleman. I can only unlock my back two wheels when I'm not stink bugging. I'm thinking of trying to hook my rear foot behind the rail and trying to "pull" my board around.

Hahahaha. Great way to put it. Gotta add that to my sig.
Actually that is sort of what happened. Some girl texting WHILE turning onto the road went right in front of me so I just instinctly grabbed rail and threw my hips around like crazy.

Ah that makes a lot of sense to me. When I was practicing it with stink bug in a parking lot majority of the time it forced my torso to lurch forward. Each time it did I was able to easily compensate by riding through the slide like an attempt to go 180 degrees I imagine it'd mean death at higher speeds (I practice at about ~15mph at my fav parking lot)

Not worth taking the 10 seconds to put your helmet on?

It's also hard to cover your face when your arm is stuck between yyour legs and under you. Stinkbug highsides will usually put you smack dab on your chin or your face.

or just learn to coleman without stink bugging.
even cliff specifically advises his students to not do this, its dangerous!

I intend to.
I sort of find it disgraceful to have to stink bug anyway, feel like it shows little skill.. and to be honest it doesn't take much anyway.

Re: Stink Bugging a Coleman
the normal way to grab rail is to keep your arm behind your back leg (not between your legs) but to grab in front of your back foot, so your wrist crosses over your ankle. in order to do this correctly you have to lay your back food on its side and point your knee forward(ish)
grabbing stinkbug restricts your flexibility and most people agree that it looks bad
any kind of grabbing is unnecessary though and the sooner you get used to throwing your hand up the sooner you will be doing 360s
If you go fast enough, you never have to look back.

Re: Stink Bugging a Coleman
grabbing stinkbug is dangerous.
you're definitely not going fast enough, if your wheels aren't broken in sliding at 15 will be tough except for a quick shutdown.
