I've rode a paved road on a luge before that was about as steep as the NZ one and it was the toughest road that I have ever ridden. It was only a half mile but under full braking I was still cruising about 10-15 mph and at the end I had to go under a cable and run off into the grass to stop. If only there wasn't a 90* turn at the bottom it would be awesome to break a world record at since I estimate luge speed would be 110+ mph.

I actually walked up Baldwin St while in Dunedin a few years ago - no way in hell would I skate down it.

Id slide down that, it seems like any road no matter how steep can be ridden down safely if you just slide. Once you get going fast, just keep pulling pendys to control your speed.

It would be interesting to have a competition as to who could destroy either the most or the least of their wheel while sliding down it. Would be awesome to see someone pull a layback down the whole thing.

I don't know, that one looks like one of those "accelerate as you slide" kind of hills.

And yeah, I think that hump would result in the kind of airtime that would be like those dreams you have when you're young and gravity reverses and you plummet away from the earth in this horrible vertigo inducing lurch.

(Maybe I'm the only one who had dreams like that.)

True. It'd be steep. but look at all those cracks in the road. definitely not fun to ride down. I'd take an average steep hill with awsome pavement over that any day.

In my opinion..skating that, would be a very long and fast "controlled fall"

so steep that the upper part is surfaced with concrete as tar would run downhill in the sun.

it's record is under challenge from a street in san francisco, which is where i would have thought the steepest street was.

    anyway... slide hill pr0n.

    this street is nuts!

i've visited dunedin a few times and have always wanted to give it a go...

until i heard about a bunch of university students who died on it.

sliding downhill in wheely bins (trash cans)... losing control... crashing... ouch... pain...

but of course a skateboard would be much safer.

anyway - its a perfect reason for you guys to come to new zealand for a bit, there's a severe shortage of kiwi skaters about!

Fair play that monster is well steep. dont think i woul skate and or slide down it. Would just get a motobike and tow into the bottom of it and use it as a giant bank! now that would be fun. See who can slide the furthest up it!......just to be different.

i'd make sure i picked 9 very beautiful people to go in the matress with me - you'd get mighty cosy/squashed with whoever was in there with you, so you'd want to pick carefully!

thats a pretty big call until you've done it....

i mean, LOOK AT THAT MONSTER!

CRACKS in the road....no where to go...driveways, people, dogs...cars...not a fun spot; it'd be a run you would do just to get the rep for having done it in my opinion...i don't think you could get stoked on that hill....too too much...
