    Exclamation Make Your Own

Ya just because it should be common knowledge:

UHMW is easily found all over the web for cheap.

    McMaster-Carr

Go to this site and type in "UHMW"

It will give you a list of multiple different type's of polyethylene.
The standard type will work just fine.
One set of pucks will last for years.
You can also buy industrial strength velcro from this site with sticky backing that rival's super glue.

    Don't be fooled.
    Make your own.

nice rob, I'm definitely looking into some of that, been melting old delrin lately but I have a feeling this might work better, especially the industrial velcro

TAP Plastics or Industrial Plastics Supply have good prices.

I dunno how Ridout Plastics is for shipping, but they used to rock for this kinda thing when I was in San Diego. You might be able to find a local industrial plastics place near you too. Save on shipping, and if you're lucky they'll have random-sized bits for free or discount.

Or just buy them from other Fishies. If they got a 12"x12" sheet, that's 16 3"x3" pucks -- help a brother out by buying up their extras. Or order a sheet together with your local folks and have a puck-and-glove-making party.

Talking Re: Make Your Own UHMW Pucks

There is a company in Maine that actually manufactures the UHMW from raw polyethylene powder. They extrude it kind of like one of the old Play-Doh machines. The company is Garland Manufacturing. There stock list looks kind of like a lumberyard, so I don't know what shapes everyone is looking to buy, but there list is here: UHMW Board Bar Tube Rod Angle Tape Garland Manufacturing

    Hope that helps!

Their yellow is kind of cool, but any of the black UHMW leaves pretty messy streaks, which would probably tick off anyone who owns whatever you're riding on.

yea those places are still pretty high on there prices though. plus when you buy from me you get them beveled and pre cut and everything so if you dont have the tools then it makes way more sence. but if you know what ur doing and get it real cheap more power to you! im not looking to make a living out of this. im just making it easier and cheaper for you.i get VERY little profit i i dont care. i would like to see everyone riding a good cheap pare of slide gloves instead of those expensive loaded ones. they are loaded with crap!

Also Cue the fact that people just don't get it sometimes.
UHMW doesn't wear in sliding application's.
Buy a block of it and strap it to your shoes and have a friend drive with you dragging you UHMW'd foot out of the car for as many miles as you please and you will see.
    NO WEAR.
And black UHMW doesn't leave streaks in the road.
If it does its not really UHMW.

just wondering would UHMW cut with a jigsaw or bandsaw? I was thinking of buying a rod of the stuff with a diameter of 3.5 or so. Then i would buy like a foot of it and cut it to half an inch and have 24 peices. is this a good idea?

Really? I thought that was a joke. I didn't know he was trying to keep anything secret.

Drumroll please: the smoking gun! Found in a thread cleverly named "best place to buy UHMW?" to keep people from finding it with the search tool.

The topic has been done to death. I thought it was all common knowledge. And still, there's plenty of room between the $2 raw materials cost (for a pair) and Loaded's $15 to cover shipping and fair compensation for labor, wear on saws, etc. Making pucks for people should be a fine garage business without any need for secrecy about it -- a lot of people would pay $10 for a pair of long-lasting pucks shipped to their door.

I wasn't trying to keep anything secret. Go ahead and make them yourselves, post the link, I don't mind. What we are providing is a service. If you want to buy the material yourself and make some pucks, no one's stopping ya. Good luck! (:

I get UHMW/PE from McMaster Carr. But I get the oil impregnated type. I cut it with a 12" Dewalt mitre saw. I've found that smaller blades will not handle the thickness of the material. Band saws have similar problems. If it isn't cooled with cutting fluid and doesn't have a wide blade the cut will deflect over distance. You can rotate the material ( 4" rod ) to help you make a more precise cut but will end up with uneven pucks. Trial and error. Put as many clamps on the slippery stuff as you can and keep your hands away from the blade.

It does wear down. I've even had the #### melt. I'll post pics when I get the cord to my camera.

Rob, once you get onto mcmaster and search uhmw what do you click on in the results. there are way too many products up there. do you just go to sheets, bars strips, and cubes and pick the size that you want?
