Default Help Identifying Vintage G&S Fibreflex

    How's it going everyone?

I'm trying to find out some information on my dad's old Fibreflex skateboard. He says that he bought it in 1977 or 1978. It's approximately 24.5 inches long and 6.5 inches wide, with a very slight rocker and a small kicktail. The trucks are Bennett Pro and the wheels are OJ Super Juice.

You can't really tell from the crappy cellphone pictures, but this board is in amazingly good condition. It was my dad's most prized possession. He told me that he used to disassemble the bearings each week to lubricate them, and he had rib and tail guards to protect the bottom of the board. I'm glad that he took such good care of it, because this thing is sweet! Too bad he won't let anyone even stand on it

If anyone has any information about this board, I would be extremely grateful!

I'm lousy with the early Fibreflex decks..but probably either a team rider or bowlrider.

    I didn't appreciate a flexy deck then, I rode a Logan.

The kick makes a difference...I just can't remember...someone will chime in and prove me wrong.

Yep, you're wrong. That deck came earlier. As simple as it sounds, that deck was called the Fibreflex Kicktail.

    Thanks so much man!

    I found this:
70's FibreFlex Steve Cathey Skateboard w Gull Wing R (05/25/2009)...

It looks to be near identical to my dad's board. However, upon searching for the Steve Cathey model, I couldn't find anything except someone requesting a 25 inch Steve Cathey model, preferably in yellow. Do you think that this could be the board?

No. The Steve Cathey deck was a freestyle deck, with no kicktail. The sticker on top also said Steve Cathey on it. Yours is a 25" Kicktail model.

Look here for old ads: http://www.calstreets.com/site/index...per&Itemid=103

In this Vol 2 Vintage Skate Ads, fifth page back, upper left, see the Best In Country ad. There are other G&S Fibreflex ads in the 8 volumes, so search through them & you'll see your deck.

Thank you so much for your help SDO! I really appreciate it.

So, just out of curiosity, what do you think the board is worth? My dad would never sell it, I'm just interested since I've seen some vintage G&S boards go for pretty high prices.

I don't think my dad would appreciate me giving it away

I'm planning on lightly restoring the board (cleaning the wheels and bearings, removing some tape residue, etc) and getting a nice wooden wallmount for it. I'll post higher quality pictures as soon as I'm done cleaning it up.

I am on Ebay quite a bit (actually owned one of these in 1976 - 1977). I would say this complete is worth around $150 - $225. Hard to tell with those pictures.
    Peace

Yes me too, I think thats just the standard 25" kicktail model.

It is a little later version because the griptape is sort of die-cut to the shape. Most of earliest had a straight piece of the 4" wide (or thereabouts) rubberized tread.

I would say the '77 -'78 is pretty much dead nuts on. If that was bought as a complete or components (at the same time), the years make sense too. Those are the second versions of the GW phoenix, with the angled hanger ends (same as the 6" Pro-classics) so wheels with inset inboard bearings could be ran. I think the revised Phoenix came out in late 77, early 78. I have the dates at home, but not here.

GW's had very short axles. If you had a badly poured wheel (RR4, sims/ etc) that put the bearing beyond flush, the wheel would rub on the phoenix hanger; and there was no room for washers, unless you turned the nut backwards. On the split axles it was not an issue because the bearing seat was basically like a nut. The revised hanger end, which matched the newly released GW Pro truck (the first 6" version), fixed the problem. Even the "trademark" fins/grooves are little different. If you look at the inboard grooves, they do not go all the way around the hanger. GW used two grooves, but the revision would not enable the grooves to go all the way around. The outboard groove on the revised phoenix was originally the inboard on the original. Then they made a new groove inboard of that for the revison, to retain that "trademark" GW 2 groove appearance on the hanger.

I will have to shoot a few pics of mine too. I have CaliforniaSlalom Pros (the narrower version) with Sims Bowlrider. the rubber tread is quite slick and I have been debating for a few years about replacing the it with real grip tape (same exact layout though). I ride my old boards.

My comments represent a selfishly one sided 1970's skateboarder mindset, and do not reflect the current fashion-skate-lifestyle industry's views.

Here's a shot of me riding my G&S in 1977. This was a permission pool, owned by of all people, an insurance salesman! Please no comments about the shorts or socks, remember it was the 1970s

That's a cool board and good on your old man for preserving it. Like him, I cherish my old Fibreflex. Mine was "my car" for several years and still sits in its final transpo format. Hang onto that thing: never gonna be another, as the material used to make original Fibreflex is gone, done and over.
