Old, heavy, and having fun.
so, i need some direction. after 20+ years of skating and snowboarding, i have been "off the board" for 5 years or so, my wrists are shot from too many slams. my two little boys ages 5 and 6 are learning the ropes, i have a long board and a retro board and have been riding again. took a couple of really hard slams at the skatepark last night and my wrists can't take it... anyone know of some good quality wrist guards, not the cheapo ones from wal-mart? finding anything for adults like this is futile in my town. apparently full grown men shouldn't ride skateboards, but i am not willing too much fun and good exersize, plus nothing compares to seeing your 5 yo. drop into a vert ramp for his first time. any help would be appreciated, my little girl wrists thank you all in advance.

Sorry, can't help with the wrist guard...just wanted to say that I'm glad I'm not the only old guy on here trying to revive his youth with the help of son/sons and longboard!
Getting to old for the pool and ramps, myself, to many bones that ache and creak nowadays....8)

Re: Old, heavy, and having fun.
got em today. triple 8 hired hands. burly full leather construction. half gloves. two splints, one on top, one for palm area. 32 bucks. exactly what i was looking for. thanks everyone... just remember. it all starts with a longboard cause you are gonna be mellow. then the kids wanna hit the skatepark and a longboard just won't do. in comes the veteran retro board. soon you are riding ramps again after 15 to 20 years. no better feeling than dropping in on a vert ramp @ 37 after nearly 20 years. YOU DO FORGET IT. can't ollie anymore, can't air it out any more, can barely grind, can't boardslide or boneless, but its still all fun. miss big ollies the most. used to be able to ollie a garbage can or onto a park table. now i'm lucky to get three inches. it'll come, just practice and more practice.

FF1- stick with it man, it will come back. You said it best though
in that you are having fun, and that's why we all got into this in the
first place (at least according to Johny Rad)

Re: Old, heavy, and having fun.
I have terrible wrists too, buy a couple 5 and 10 pound dumbbells and do wrist exercises every day.
Football destroyed my wrists, they feel like old man wrists at the age of 16

I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid. You're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world.. without you. A world without rules or controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible.

Re: Old, heavy, and having fun.
37 is not old. If you keep skating with your kids you won't get "old" either.

Re: Old, heavy, and having fun.
37 seems old for the skateboarding world, apparently not to you guys though. 230lbs. seems REALLY fat on a board, may not look too fat, but the slams tell me otherwise. last true slams i've had i weighed around 150. hurts more now...... I hope it does keep me young, just can't afford to get hurt, and that seems unavoidable. being overly cautious is not as much fun, and i will never improve or learn anything new. the old muscle memory is no longer there.. I was locally sponsored when i was 14, but 16 came, girls, cars, and snowboarding took over and i really haven't touched a board, except for screwing around, since then. I'm really amazed i can still ride ramps, NOT WELL, but i can drop in, truck stall, rock&roll, grind alittle. fakie ANYTHING is sketchy as hell, but i'll never get any better just pissing around and not going for it sometimes. I have got to get back that "comfortable" feeling on the board. I don't expect to be good anymore, i just want to feel comfy cruising around the skatepark with my kids. now everything feels pretty uncontrolled, not sketchy, but not comfy.
