Alternative baseplates for vintage Gullwing Phoenix??
I wanted to know if my composite GW 'Phoenix' baseplates ever crapped out, what baseplates would fit as a replacement?
And I gotta say, the dip in the hanger makes grinds & especially slappys, a BREEZE.
Edit: 2/2/05 - BUMP!!

Hmmm, a Tracker base might work. I've done the opposite - Tracker hanger in a Gullwing baseplate. Those Gull composite baseplates hold up pretty good though. I might have one kickin' around, let me look for ya'.

Where is Rawls? He's the Gullwing king. If anyone should know he would.

Same here. 9 years ago, I was running 129mm B2 hangers on old SuperPro III baseplates on my slalom board, because I didn't want to redrill my deck, and the B2 plates were new school only...

I do not know for sure. I only have one set of the 80's phoenix, and that was simply for the sake of having them. Normally, the Pros are what I ride, unless we are talking old stuff (split axles and the original phoenix).
But, I will investigate to see. the hanger angle is much steeper, and I know the phoenix and pro do not interchange.
Pros and Trackers will interchange, adequately well, but you have to make sure of the pivot bushing depth.

Re: Alternative baseplates for vintage Gullwing Phoenix??
hello, sorry for the thread bump. but I have a couple questions regarding old gullwings...
so im about to finally buy a set of Gullwing pro 3 trucks, they come with the composite baseplate as you probably already know. the thing is that I want a metal baseplate on them instead.
any reccomendations on a baseplate that would fit the pro 3's?
would the current tracker dart baseplate work on them?

Re: Alternative baseplates for vintage Gullwing Phoenix??
If your Gullwings have the angled pivot like a Tracker does (which I think it does), then the Trackers should work. Later Gullwings have a straight Indy-style pivot.
By the way, I've got an extra set of Tracker Dart baseplates, if you need a set........

Yeah, the Gulling pro 3's have the angled pivot. Awesome, I was really hoping they'd work.
And thanks for the offer but I've got a few tracker Dart baseplates in good condition already.

Re: Alternative baseplates for vintage Gullwing Phoenix??
Now, its Pros, and not Phoenix, correct?
the tracker old geometry (modern Dart models) and GW pros is pretty close. As are the Sure Grip invaders. but you have to make sure the pivot bushing depths are correct. the GW Pro used a very shallow insertion depth into the baseplate. Using a deeper bushing like all the modern stuff will let the hanger go too deep and the rubbers and kingpin will have incorrect relationship.
another valuable tidbit is the GW mission M1 trucks. they will swap out directly for sure, BUT you have to use the GW pro pivot bushing. swapping Pros with Missions, you have to use the original bushing that matches the hanger, not the one that was in the baseplate.
I have to ask why you are not wanting to go with the Nylon GW pro baseplates? when those things came out as an accessory (at first) around '85, I jumped on them immediately and have no qualms about riding them. I run nylon based GW Pros on all of my tranny/rounwall set-ups. Although you may want an aluminum base for restoration reasons or something.
I have been riding GW's since late 77 and Pros (exclusively) since early1979, when the 10" boards were first coming out. Actually they came out around summer of 78, but it takes a couple of months for the magazines to hit, then a few weeks for the shops to respond.
