I agree with Michael about the missed opportunity for shops. I am a shop owner, we try to carry a variety of stuff, because skating is skating. But... I see just as much narrow-mindedness from the hardcore longboard ("please don't call us 'skaters'!!!Ugh! We're LONGBOARDERS!) crowd. They will disdainfully look away from a video playing in the shop because it's not their thing. They are generally ignorant about some of the greatest skaters of all time & their achievements. They are elitist & fanatically boring about gear. As for the first-time longboard buyers, they are mostly enthusiastic, open-minded & refreshing to deal with. (Although you sometimes have to overlook the jester hats, overalls & hackey sacks!)

Mikey - next time tell me you have a booth, I'll come work it for free. Just give me a corner of a room to crash.

any comments on the clues this gives as to the size of the longboard market?

the news release says it will add 2% to Billabong's revenues. 06/07 revenues for Billabong were 1.2B AUS (roughly on par with USD). 2% makes $24m annual revenues.

rough guesses on market share for S9? 10%? You can then extrapolate different wild figures from the size of the longboard market as a whole...

Also you can make guesses on the payout for this. What revenue multiple are skate companies usually valued at? 1X? 2X?

Say they paid 1X for S9. $24m. Say the owners/cofounders had 30% each, that's a 7m payout... Not bad!

All of the above is total speculation and is probably grossly inaccurate; without actual figures it's impossible to know anything. [But if you wait till their next semi-annual Billabong figures come out, the purchase price should be reflected in their reporting]

Nice Mikey!

And you can probably bet that they will take better care of the van, you're not just a faceless customer - you're the guy with the skateboard!

Oh, and nice work with the Witnesses - they never come to my house, guess they can't get past the hearse in the driveway......
