There are hundreds of thousands of older skaters around the world who spread the stoke of skateboarding to the current generation. Each one teaches, inspires and mentors skaters in his (or her) own unique way. Likewise, there are hundreds of thousands of younger skaters who inspire and teach the older generation of skaters and quite often blow their minds with how far they progress. I’ll be the first to admit that today’s level of skating is truly awesome. I simply can’t believe what skaters are accomplishing at increasingly younger ages. Sometimes, however, we get so caught up within our own skate worlds that we forget that all generations of skaters have something to offer

About eleven years ago, I picked up a book called “The One to One Future.” In this ground-breaking work, authors Don Peppers and Martha Rogers examined what happens when technology allows companies to market to customers on a one to one basis. The book originally was published in 1993 and a decade and a half later, it’s incredible to see how on point they were. I couldn’t help but think about the one to one future while I was preparing this article on skateboard customization. It is my belief that skaters all over the world will pick up on the benefits of having skate gear that is uniquely created for them. This article examines three areas of customization: deck construction, board graphics and grip tape. I am sure it’s only a matter of time when we see truck and wheel customization. Until that moment arrives however, there is still a tremendous amount to explore.

If you were looking for somewhere new on earth to bomb
a hill and you spun a globe of the world, and ended up with your finger on Cape Town, South Africa, fortune would have led you to a good place. For a start, the city has got some craggy, sheer mountains towering over it, many of them plunging straight into the cold sea. Secondly, and most importantly, in this city of six million, there are plenty of steep, winding runs. For a modern downhill skater, this combination makes for the sickest selection of choice hills. You can bomb the narrow, twisting vertigo-inducing coastal highways with million dollar postcard views. Or to go to the smoothest hills you’ve ever rolled on, found hidden, beyond the city limits in farmlands, open bush and forests. From way back in the day runs were found and conquered

When people say the name “New York,” people think of the town that boasts of itself as the world’s greatest city. This is indeed a New York story, but it has nothing to do with either yellow cabs or Times Square. This is about Madison County in rural upstate New York, where the people are more likely to cook you breakfast than call the cops if they find you sleeping on their front doorstep
