If you were looking for somewhere new on earth to bomb
a hill and you spun a globe of the world, and ended up
with your finger on Cape Town, South Africa, fortune
would have led you to a good place. For a start, the city has
got some craggy, sheer mountains towering over it, many of
them plunging straight into the cold sea. Secondly, and
most importantly, in this city of six million, there are plenty
of steep, winding runs. For a modern downhill skater, this
combination makes for the sickest selection of choice hills.
You can bomb the narrow, twisting vertigo-inducing coastal
highways with million dollar postcard views. Or to go to the
smoothest hills you’ve ever rolled on, found hidden, beyond
the city limits in farmlands, open bush and forests.

North Carolina’s DownHillBillies have quickly established a solid reputation for putting on a first class skateboarding event. There are many reasons for the DownHillBillie’s success but two of the key reasons are they ensure they have excellent prerace planning and a solid team in place to execute their plans. This article focuses mostly on planning a slalom race, but the advice given here is applicable for planning all sorts of skate events including a downhill, slide, street or transition
contest.

Those with a sharp eye will remember Carly “Midget” Richardson featured
in the table of contents photo from Vol. 3 no 5. Carly lives in
Vancouver, British Columbia, a place that has a reputation for being
both a skate mecca and a pretty rainy city. As you can see, Carly isn’t
going to let something like a little bit of rain stand in her way of riding.
