In the mid seventies, I remember reading about Lonnie Toft. One of the first skaters to be seen riding a wider board and also the creator of the 8- wheeler. One of my all-time favorite skate photos was from that same era. The one of Lonnie cruising outside City Hall in Toronto, Ontario on his 8-wheeler, wearing a tuxedo, top-hat, and red Vans deck shoes while holding a cane on the deck. To this day, that photo is timeless and a classic. I was honored and lucky enough to be able to catch up with Lonnie.

If you were looking for somewhere new on earth to bomb
a hill and you spun a globe of the world, and ended up
with your finger on Cape Town, South Africa, fortune
would have led you to a good place. For a start, the city has
got some craggy, sheer mountains towering over it, many of
them plunging straight into the cold sea. Secondly, and
most importantly, in this city of six million, there are plenty
of steep, winding runs. For a modern downhill skater, this
combination makes for the sickest selection of choice hills.
You can bomb the narrow, twisting vertigo-inducing coastal
highways with million dollar postcard views. Or to go to the
smoothest hills you’ve ever rolled on, found hidden, beyond
the city limits in farmlands, open bush and forests.
From way back in the day runs were found and conquered

What kinds of material do you incorporate into your products? Sean Methven, Product Line Manager, Pro-tec This depends on the price point and intended use of the product. Most pads we make utilize an injection molded hard cap, EVA foam, Memory foam, Ballistic Nylon, Neoprene, Airprene, Velcro, etc. We’re working with a company right now to utilize their proprietary impact-absorbing material. This new material will absorb impact more efficiently and be much thinner than normal foams. This will allow us to slim down our designs while improving the safety characteristics.
