Walmart and Longboards
Well, they’ve hit over 4 pages at the Ontario Longboarding forumon this topic, so it only makes sense to add my take…
There have been cheap longboards available for quite some time…
Dicks Sporting Goods has racks of em!
Walmart, believe it or not, studies the competition and I wouldn’t be surprised if the sporting goods buyer reads Concrete Wave.
Walmart, in order to thrive, need to find that magic mix of low cost and volume…otherwise it doesn’t work. They sell billions of dollars of stuff each week. Smart retailers who specialize in high cost, low volume products can thrive, but it takes a huge amount of work. Will this get more folks cruising? Perhaps. But then again, this might be a “impulse” buy. The board could be used for a few months and then promptly forgotten about.
By the way….
In Southern Calif. Price Club just introduced a legend series - Dave Hackett and Steve Olson completes with KHIRO bushings - for $49.95. If the test works, they’ll roll them out to more shops.
The image on the bottom of the Hackett Deck is from our Vol 5 no 2 cover when he did the loop - I guess the photograher sold it. We did not have the rights.
For the record, the mag was in Walmart for a test to see how it would fly on the mag rack. It didn’t. In hindsite, I felt if Thrasher and Transworld were in there, we should be too. They also got booted.
Mike McGill is a very cool guy…and super friendly. He’s also business wise, one of the shrewdest members of the Bones Brigade. Both Tony and Rodney did really well financially too, but McGill is doing quite nicely, thank you.
It’s a numbers game at the mighty Walmart…if they move off the shelf, they’ll be back next year. If not, well, someone is eating a lot of unsold product…
