Review of the Loaded Overland


Throughout the last couple of years, the trend of large double-kick decks and “hybrid” skateboards has really taken a hold in the market. This trend promotes versatility and the “skate everything” mentality that has emerged in the new breed of skateboarders, and large double kick decks fit the bill perfectly for this type of riding. Bombing, pool, park, street, freeride… you name it, these decks are becoming the board of choice for your ‘do it all’ skater.

Loaded Longboards have been paying close attention to the desires of the community and have been chipping away at creating a more versatile range of skateboards for quite some time now. Loaded’s newest freeride/downhill/do-everything offering to the community, the Overland, combines aspects of the Kanthaka and the Tesseract to bridge the size gap and form one very, very intriguing deck that sets it apart from other hybrid-style deck in the market. At the Longboard Consortium, we got our hands on the Overland and took to the streets to see what it’s really made of.

Initial Impressions

As soon as we picked this thing up out of the box we really were surprised how light this board was, even when setup with trucks and wheels. We aren’t exactly sure how much the Overland weighs but you can be assured that it is very, very light indeed. The next thing that piqued our interest was the textured urethane bottom that is a headlining feature of the Overland.  This feature sets it apart from every other deck on the market seeing as we have never seen this type of construction in a skateboard before. This hard, ridged urethane base is designed to help with vibration dampening and absorbing road feel as well as making board slides and other rail and ledge tricks smoother.

The dual-grit griptape on the top of the deck is a nice touch for hybrid decks such as the Overland. Gritty, sharp griptape covers the rails of the deck whilst smoother, popsicle-style grip is left to cover a center strip and both the nose and tail. This means that you can still bust out ollies, kickflips, shuv-its and more without tearing up your shoes, but you still have courser grip where it counts to prevent any foot slippages during downhill, freeride and sliding. The center cut-out in the grip for the Loaded logo showcases a sublimated compass design that we feel is a really nice aesthetic touch.

Now we must admit that the directional shape of this deck is a bit weird for a double kick hybrid skateboard, but we trust that we’re in safe hands with Loaded in the driver’s seat on this one. The radial concave, decent-sized wheel flares (that also help stop wheelbite) and rocker have been designed to make you feel locked-in and in full control at all times. The construction of the Overland uses bamboo sandwiched in layers of fiberglass to create a durable, light and slightly flexy skateboard deck. We expect the vibration dampening properties of the bamboo/fiberglass construction coupled with the TPU base layer to give us a nice, smooth ride over nearly every kind of pavement.


Loaded has a habit of pushing deck design and trying something new with their products and it’s safe to say that the Overland has been no exception to this trend. We genuinely couldn’t wait to test this baby out on the slopes and streets, and that is exactly what we did.

Riding Impressions

We decided to run the Overland on the 22-inch wheelbase option for all our freeride, slide and downhill applications just for that extra little bit of stability and driftiness that were accustomed to. The solid combination 180mm Paris 50 trucks and Orangatang Kilmer 86a wheels made us feel right at home almost instantly when doing absolutely anything on this deck.

Down hills, the Overland is a beast. Featuring mild radial concave, rocker and great wheel flares to prevent wheelbite and keep you locked in, this deck certainly provides an extremely comfortable standing platform that keeps you locked in without being so extreme that your feet ache. The combination of dual kicks and wheel flares create a pocket at each end of the deck to wedge your feet in for extra leverage during slides.


Now although even the largest wheelbase option is quite a bit smaller than similar decks we have tried in the past it did not take us long to get comfortable on it. In fact, the small wheelbase makes spins and more technical slides involving no-complies, shuv-its and more very easy. The dual-grit griptape that comes standard on the Overland held up extremely well after more than a month of daily riding and kept us locked in well at all times. Some people may be led to believe that because this deck is slightly flexy that it will be sketchy at speeds. Well, never fear because we can confirm that we had absolutely no issues with the flex on this deck with our test rider sitting at around 170lbs. As long as you’re standing over your trucks when going fast you shouldn’t encounter any problems in this department.

On the shorter 20.75” wheelbase we found popping ollies, manuals and other similar tricks on this deck is a breeze. The bamboo and fiberglass construction allows this deck to be extremely light when compared to others of a similar size. We didn’t find the flex to the Overland hindering us with popping tricks as we first thought which was a pleasant surprise, and we actually found it to help us out with absorbing impact when stomping down ollies and the like. Admittedly, our tester is not an amazing street skater so we could not thoroughly test out the capabilities of the ridged TPU base layer on rail and ledge slides. He did, however, try some boardslides on small curbs and reported that the slide was indeed smoother than that of a regular wooden deck.


The vibrational absorption qualities of this deck are quite exceptional in our opinion. We would usually recommend using at least a 1/8” shock pad with most decks, but with the Overland we feel that you can get away without one at all. The bamboo/fiberglass combo and urethane base helps dampen the vibrations of skating chunderous pavement. It’s safe to say, Loaded really went out of their way to deliver you guys an extremely comfy deck this time round.


Now, the Loaded Overland isn’t without a few minor flaws that you might want to know about. First off, we think that the ‘Lock-in waist’ design is kind of gimmicky and just an excuse to set the board apart from other on the market. We don’t believe that the waist played any part in how locked in we felt on this deck, and it really shouldn’t play in our minds.

This leads to our next point, the shape of the Overland: we think a slightly more symmetrical shape with a less extreme waist may have been a better way to go with this deck seeing as though it is a hybrid double kick. We think the odd shape my turn some riders away from trying out the Overland in favour of other, more symmetrical, decks on the market.


Hybrid skateboards are the current market trend and the ‘skate everything’ mentality that more and more skaters are adopting has become exponentially more popular lately. This calls for innovation in deck design and technology, and who better to answer this call than Loaded Longboards. Their latest offering, the Overland, has been designed to bridge the gap between the street-orienatated Kanthaka and the freeride machine of the Tesseract to deliver the perfect do-it-all board for every riding application.

Dual kicktails, flares and rocker combined with ground-breaking construction and a snappy flex that will have you slashing, sliding and popping ollies everywhere, the Loaded Overland will shred on every type of terrain. The Loaded Team have endeavoured to deliver a very well thought-out and executed slashing machine this time around through months of extensive testing and tweaking, and the end result has paid off greatly.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed thrashing this deck and giving you guys some feedback on what’s up with this brand-new release from Loaded Longboards. We believe that this deck is extremely solid in nearly every application you could think of and there is not a lot that isn’t possible with the Overland. This deck promotes shredding everything and getting out and having a good time skating with your buddies.
