Default A Simple Way to Make a Dimm Press With Concave and Camber

First, if you are not familiar with what a Dimm press is, go here and learn about it: http://www.silverfishlongboarding.co...nal-video.html

I noticed that there was some interest in making a simple press that would do both camber and concave, I was also interested and so I came up with this.

Essentially the goal was to come up with a press that would create the concave and in this case kick tails that I wanted, but to make the press flexible enough so that I could tighten it down on the layers of the board and then bend the whole press to create camber.

This eliminated the need to cut compound curves in the foam, making the process simpler and quicker.

What I did was to create the foam part of the press exactly how it is shown in the video, but instead of attaching the foam to a rigid piece of lumber, I attached it to 1/2 in plywood.

This allows the press to be flexible enough to bend, the next part was figuring out how to bend it, weights were my first idea, but I wanted something that would be more consistent and so I decided to place the press on top of two 10 inch long 4x4s, and then placed the whole thing on top of my wire grate shelving.

In order to bend the press I used four threaded rods which were longer than the bolts I used to clamp the press. The top part of the threaded rod assembly is the same as my clamps, and for the bottom I used a block of wood to distribute the pressure over more area of the shelf.

I cranked down all of the clamps to about 80-90% of total, then I tightened the camber clamps to add about 3/4in of camber, and then I fully tightened the press clamps.

Here are some shots of the blank that I produced, no finished board yet because I have to go back to school now.

If I could do it again (and I probably will) I would recommend 3/4 ply because it should still flex enough for good camber, but would provide more even pressure on the deck.

Also using this method I would recommend more clamps than would be needed for a standard Dimm press, becuase of the flexibility of the backing it helps to have more clamps for more even pressure

Also keep in mind since you are cambering the board by pulling the press down you need to have the male side of the press on the bottom and the top of your top pile facing down on the bottom of the press.

Any Questions let men know and I will help you out.

Sorry if someone has done this before, I searched around and didn't see anything like this.

    Mike

Nice man. I dig. I had a similar idea but I had already built the mother of all "rail" presses so I never followed through with it. Nice work.

Haha nope, and I live in PA so going home just to work on a board is tough to justify. (I go to school at Fordham)

No art program or anything? Dude I would go insane. There was a huge wood studio in one of the art buildings but there was also a wood shop in the student center.

Thank You! I was thinking about experimenting and trying something exactly like this but I wasnt sure if it would work.

All signs point to it working so far, finished results will be up when I can get home again to get it done.

@Dwak, nope nothing of that nature, I would love to have a wood shop here on campus, but its all business and liberal arts here

I used r-14 (or something around there) Owens Corning insulating foam from home depot. If you can find foam that is more dense go for that, but this stuff works well enough for reasonable bends in 1/8 BB.

What do you guys think about just elevating parts on the positive side and raising the negative parts that weren't raised on the positive side, in effect, lowering the part on the positive side by increasing the height of everything else around it. Alright, that sounds really confusing..

Just put something under one side of foam, then put stuff under the other pieces on the other so they match up and make camber. Of course, You'd have to do a bit of sanding/cutting to get rid of the bumps caused by this, so it might not be good for more than a bit of camber. But that's all I'm going for. I'm gonna try and make it work when I get back home.

I've seen photos of that done, seems like it would be more of a pain to do all that work in order to get a press that would only hold up for a few boards.

Seems like a 2-part foam mold like this technique, using clamps rather than a 1-part mold and a vacuum bag, would be fairly simple:
