Great thread, frare bear! Especially as I am looking forward to winter. I have contemplated building a snowboard, but at this point it seems out of my league. But maybe someday.

I have dabled with shaping a "noboard" out of solid planks of pine and oak with only marginal success. I need to experiment with cross lamination (probably using the wrong term) to make them stronger and lighter.

Anyhow, good luck with your project, and am looking forward to seeing your progress.

Why yes our snow last was pathetic. You can't even call that winter, we normally get more snow before Turkey day the we got all last year. Btw OP this idea looks so fun, I'll have to see if y wallet wants to try this out.

Finally! A little progress to report. I made about 3 different molds that turned out to be big failures, but finally have one that will work for this first build. Next time I'm just gonna build a legit hot wire cutter.... I tried ghetto versions, home made bow saws. Finally I said eff all this and went with a rib press, it's kind of a mix between typical snowboard molds you see and rib presses that people make for longboards. Here she is:

    Ribs

    Lining with 1/8" BB

Sanding, routing, taping to prevent poking holes in the bag. For the profile I went with a rocker/camber combo, hopefully to dig in on groomers and have rockered nose/tail to float through that powder

Taped up, ready to rock. Feedback is welcome... I've never seen this style of mold made

Can't wait to get this thing going!

Last year was absolutely terrible. It made me cry. I hear we should be back to average (~300 inches) in my neck of the woods... fingers crossed!

If you ever have questions when you get to building a hotwire cutter, hit me up. I built a 4 axis CNC hotwire cutter a couple semesters ago so i'm fairly familiar with the basics pieces (obviously not saying your building a cnc version or anything..)

I'm freaking amazed right now! My bag seems to be holding pressure, composed of 6mil polyethylene, heat welded seams, frankensteined valve from a TAP, and a homemade c-clamp out of PVC and a dowel. I honestly didn't think it would be even a little bit airtight, but after 15 minutes it's looking good... We'll see how it looks in the morning.

Thanks dude! I will definitely be hitting you up, maybe not about a CNC version though... yet. I leave for Mexico here soon so it probably won't be for awhile

EDIT: One hour later and still holding... I'm dumbfounded right now. Pretty ******* pleased though!

More 22oz triax than you can shake a stick at <3 this stuff

    Everything cut and rolled

Glad to see he polythene heat weld bag worked out. It's so easy to make, and I'm amazed that it works. Board looks great by the way, I'd go with the bottom texalium, looks a bit more contrasty and interesting.

You can definitely get dye sublimated topsheets, but:

    1. More expensive
    2. I'm not a graphic designer so I can't make a sweet design for it
    3. Didn't want to wait a couple weeks for it to get made/shipped
    4. Have you ever seen a texalium snowboard??

    Default THE Snowboard Building Thread

There's a "club" type thing at Mich Tech specifically for boardsports technology, and I've asked a ton of questions of the president/vice president. It seems they do a lot with fabric layup, vac bagging, and they were currently building a new pressure mold/press for skis and snowboards, which makes sense, being in the cold and insanely snowy region they're in. So I was wondering if before I go there and join them I could get a few tutorial, basic processes required in the building of a snowboard. I think it would help more than just me as well. =)

There are a couple of links on the first page of this thread. The process of snowboard building is very similar to that of ski building. Or Google it. Also, I'm looking at going to Tech next year!

Good luck at Tech you guys! I graduated from there way back in 77. My brother too, several years later and that was where he stared snowboarding on the old Burton discussed earlier in this thread.

We should start a longboarding group up there! The skate scene there is like a dead fish in stagnant waters, yet the roads are so nice, so I don't quite get it. But still, the possibilities are amazing. =)

It's because of the meter maids yell at everyone who is even carrying a board up there. We would have to be skate pirates.

How about we avoid the term pirate...bandit or outlaw works just fine. Haha
