blanks being pressed together the one for current board is teh one on the left

laying down the carbon fiber back bone (that lil strip costs 30 bucks here)

    laying down fiberglass 6 oz

    Here is my second entry.

    95cm long and 25cm wide

2 sheets of 3mm birch sandwiched between fiberglass, foam and carbon.

I took the board to my work where we have a photo studio for taking pictures of prototypes.

thanks to the fish for the advice over the years and all the inspiration you guys provided.

    keep the boards coming!!

BQTN evolution (boquetin: french for "capricorn")

Freeride-Downhill Board in hybrid construction > ash frame, honeycomb lungs, composite mix (linnen, glass, basalt),

    88cm long, 24.5cm wide

Mold is handmade with templates and a router. After a first board the mold was modified for more wheel clearance.

Since it's necessary to name a concave in a absurd way, I call mine the "bionic boob-rocker-concave with

    nodabbelju-contour".

The bottom of the board needs some further treatment, but for the moment the board has to be ridden.

This is my first build but I thought i could give it a go. I used 4 1/8th layers of baltic birch and its 38 inches long.
I did not want any drastic curves too it, so i used the screw press method and added weights to get rocker. It worked very well and i got exactly the amount i intended. The trucks and wheels are off my gravity minicarve.

Then i added yellow the the side and put a couple layers of polyurethane on each side followed by various sandpaper grits from 220 to 2000.

Im gonna need 2 posts for this.

After all the layer of poly and sanding. I put a final layer of poly on top and added tread tex on it for grip. Overall the final product ended up like this:

NOTE: I HAD THE BOARD STOLEN IN MALLORCA IF YOU SEE THE BOARD PLEASE MESSAGE ME.
This will be my only entry because a lack of time. Its a 39,5inch(1000mm) long drop-trough with 3/5inch(15mm) concave and rocker, it is 10 inches wide(250mm) and weighs just above 1kg(2,2pounds). The wheelbase is 33inches (770mm). The graphics come from storm3d.com i only changed the pattern slightly to fit on the board. I want to apologies for the gigantic photos i have not found a good way to put them up here

I start pressing the board by combining 3 layers of Baltic birch 4mm plywood with epoxy resin.

I use planks and clamps on the rocker press since i've found that it is the easiest way of getting a good shape .

Here's a closeup on the concave. I cut slits in the plywood from the middle to one side of the board, this helps the board retain the concave but makes the board little less stiff.

Here's the blank, you can clearly see the rocker.

I print out the shape i have designed in a cad program.

I glue the piece of paper on the underside of the board and cut out the shape. i have at this point already drilled the holes for the dropp-trough.

I remove the paper and draw out the wheel wells

Close up of the dropp-trough holes

i sand the wheel wells and plane the edges to reduce weight

add one layer of fiberglass on a 45 degree angle to give the board better twist strength

here's an overview of the board after i've removed all the extra carbon fiber

    the board varnished

the final product with the vinyl applied

there are only two pictures of me riding the board, I got 4 days of skating before my friends forgot it on top of a hill

Hi guys, this is my first entry.I really wanted to make a carbon fiber board with a tail since i figured it lightness would make it easier to olly so I did. Im pretty happy with it besides the wrinkles and the finish. its my 6th foam core board. spec are: 5/8 tub concave, 5/8 tub drop, 37 inch long, 26 in wheel base, 5.5 in tail.

To make the foam core I first sketch the boards shape in solid works then off set it in by 1/4 in so that there is some space for the carbon to wrap around the core when it is cut. also add wheel wells to the core sketch. I use this to make a router template.Name: P1000874.JPG

The mold took a few hours to make using a hot wire, sanding block and sure form. I first designed it in solid works to figure out the dimensions and such.Name: P1000871.JPG

I forgot to snap pics of the thermo-formed core, but I did with my oven heating half the core at a time using a cardboard wall to keep the heat in the oven haha. Here's the board being pressed. I just made a vacuum table, but Im just using a regular TAP bag upside down in this one. DO NOT GET EPOXY ON YOUR SEALING TAPE!Name: P1000883.JPG

The board came out of the bag pretty rough. The uni CF I used is 24 oz which was not happy to conform with out wrinkling. However, hot coats and sanding worked out pretty well.Name: P1000890.JPG

I wasn't sure if I could pull this deck off at first since it has a few first attempts (vac-bag and routed wells), but it's turned out to be the best thing I've ever built Here's the specs:

    Length: 35.5"
    Width (widest): 9.9" waists at 8 5/8"
    Wheelbases: 23.5" - 28"
Concave has a 4" wide flat section down the center of the board then is radial 5/8 deep from there out.
The layup is 12mm of pressed hoop pine. The inside third of the deck has around 180g of material removed. Uni-carbon then 4x4 twill weave roadside to stiffen her up. The resultant flex is pretty much non-existent under my 140 pounds.

    And the process:

SF seems determined to put that one more picture on the first post, but here's the rest of the finished board:
The finish doesn't look so good here, but the blotchiness you see is actually reflections of clouds. It's very shiny. The graphics are vinyl cut by hand.

Default Re: 2013 "SICKEST Board of '13" Board Building Competition - ENTRY THREAD

Here it is: my first entry!

My last board was very light. Very stiff! but also quite uncomfortable on the shitty roads around here.
So the next one: a comfortable board. but still light. And possibly stiff, for the solid feel.
Carbon, PU sidewalls, Nomex honeycomb core, nothing new. But then, the comfortable part...
Preferably something flexy, shock absorbing and vibration dampening.
Nothing really usable in the materials above. So I split the board in two parts. A flexy, vibration dampening stringer, and a stiff and light deck.
The stringer is made of UD glass, and flax for the dampening part

    The design:
    Name: d3-r1.jpg
Views: 10152
Size: 41.9 KB

A rocker, and rocker matching outline, nice flat spot in the concave, nice for pushing, and a simpler build, and the stringer.

    The build:

Moulds: cnc machined(for a good fit ), glassed coated and finished by me.
    Name: 13040055.jpg

Size: 26.2 KB

Size: 17.4 KB

Mould and poured outline around the core:

Laminated, vacbagged, released, time for a dry fit:

    Joining:

    Joined and waiting for paint:

    Painted:

    Board

    Board being ridden

After a few hours on the board, I can say: I really like it! It is (way) more comfortable than any of my other boards.
Off course, there are some thing that can be better:
Make the stringer longer to accommodate drop holes better, and make more use of flex from stringer
Don't **** up the sidewall with the router,
Don't **** up the droptroughs with a variety of tools (really hard stuff!)
And don't **** up the paint by trying to do it too fast

This is basically a proof of concept. For the next board I need my own CNC router. And a lot of testing. But it will be even better. By a lot. First, I need a job to pay all that :P This year, this will be my best board

    Edit: 1200 grams/2.65 lbs
