Just for fun, here's some fabrication work I did for a completely DIFFERENT enthusiast industry (this happened to be for a pro football player):
Construction of Lawyer Milloy's custom F650
I forgot these pics were on the same server as that subsonic vane project...

This link though, shows how many different techniques and materials can coexist (even in one project), and has some good examples of materializing a fabricated form literally from nothing.
Lots of learning, fabrication, tools and techniques - and none of it involving a skateboard.

Personally, I think someone with an industrial fabrication background, even if they haven't built a skateboard, probably is qualified to give some good advice on how to router for a flush-cut mount, or how to plan through a vacuum bagging project.

So I'm left scratching my head - who really cares if a fabricator has made a skateboard?

What's important in someone giving advice is that they have experience specifically in the thing they are offering advice on.

What's really the cool thing about this thread is just seeing all the great stuff people have built!
This thread is about heart not hate. I could care less if someones board is a piece of Home Depot ply cut out with trucks slapped on it or a WeFunk. I wasn't even getting pin point specific about build techniques or knowledge of them, as brainfartalerts and Ted suggested. Although it's a valid point. Just the fact that a board was made. Everyone else so far has played along nicely and posted pics of boards their proud of making, which is really the threads main point, without having to do a big ol' write up on how wrong this thread is.

But, to respond to your thoughts. I, as well as many others, care if someone has made a board or not when giving advise on a board building forum. Super Joe woodworker or composite man pro can come in answering questions with all their experience in their related fields but to me the badge of honor remains with the actual board builder.

So to all actual board builders keep those pics coming. Awesome stuff so far.

That was MY point, that the cool part about this thread was to see all the cool stuff people had built.

But that wasn't really why this thread was started - granted I don't know what threads or comments or maybe bad advice you are frustrated with...
What I got from the opening post:
"you shouldn't even want to try to help someone or answer a question, if you haven't built the kind of board they are building - or at least a board."

Seems more "on topic" with respect to the original post to point out that what's important in answering a question is simply being qualified to answer the question - regardless of how.

Don't attack me - I fully, wholeheartedly share your concern about people taking advice from people who shouldn't be giving it.
Consider this fantasy situation: Wouldn't you learn more taking advice from Norm Abram on how to set up a fixture to use a router to cut matched radiuses down the sides of your board, than you would listening to how someone here did it with a jigsaw and palm sander? And I'm sure Norm Abram hasn't built a skateboard.

I think you'd agree with all that.

I'm with you too on the "heart" aspect - but if someone asks a "how do I", I'd be happier encouraging their stoke by encouraging people to respond and participating in the discussion positively - not trying to create an air of intimidation of "unless you are a professional board builder..."

And I'll go back and read that first thread, maybe i've completely misinterpreted, and I apologize if I did.
But then return to me the respect of not assuming negativity from my post.

It's cool geolemon. I agree that knowledge and expertise in certain realms of fabrication and construction aid in helping others with questions here. The thing is, I see so many people throwing around answers without a shred of tangible proof that they've even attempted to build a board much less with the method of construction their talking about. They read through this forum, get some answers and sit around all day parroting those answers to questions. It gets tiresome. Is it going to stop? No, it's inevitable on a forum like this but at least in this thread you can prove you've done something.

Now look, almost a whole page of text without a single board shot.

Here's a few more old pics of mine to get the ball rolling again.

More proof pics! Like the title says...

There has to be a new word in our language created for someone who sits on their ass all day reading the internet then claims to know all! Maybe netasspro or squaeek would work.

I see this type of people at woodworking trade shows a lot. OH YA...I know all about that! Usually you can spot them a mile away, arms crossed, head a little back, not really wanting to come close to the bench in fear of them being asked that one question that will expose their dirty little secret that they really know squat about vacuum laminating or whatever.

This phenomenon is also rampant on many woodworking forums where people instantly become experts and know all about veneering, specifically my product because they read an ariticle somewhere. I rarely reply to post on woodworking forums anymore because of the armchair experts. It is not worth the effort.

It has been a pleasant relief that on the fish most people usually do know something about what they are giving advise on.
