    Default HDR Photo Editing

So I've recently been getting into this HDR photo editing. Trying to make the best of my little Panasonic DMC-TZ3 that I won about a year or two ago. I was just looking for some feedback on how you guys think I am doing. Any area's of improvement? Constructive criticism only please, and if you think I did a good job, well you can tell me that too!

    Nice pic, not hdr though

Rule #1 of HDR: you need multiple photos of the same object with different exposures.
Anything else is just messing with photoshop sliders...

Looks good, what sliders did you use in PS? I've found that Nik Color Effects Pro has some filters than can emulate the HDR effect pretty well, with just one photo-- although like dlx said, you need multiple exposures for "true" HDR (although, with that Nik plug-in I can barely tell the difference).

not really if you have a natural photo you can make three copies of it and change the exposure in levels on each then put the three together. i over did this one for emphasis:

    to

another filter that works but isnt hdr is high pass. i use that one alot but just a tiny bit

I primarily adjusted the highlights/shadows, black/white levels, and saturation. I also have been experimenting with the Dodge, Sponge, and Burn tool. I have used mulitple layers of one photo to do my own version of HDR. Using various opacities you can make pretty good changes like that. But PS is very new to me. Coop just hooked me up with a pen/pad for PS so I've been trying to get into it.

I know how to get the 3 different pictures with the different exposures but what do with them after that? All the information I can find is about the fake hdr stuff.

the only good HDR is when it's so subtle that the photo pops, but you can't tell why.

take a normal exposed picture, and one metered one stop under, and one stop over.

IMO it works best in lower light (sunset, dusk), so the highlights and shadows are emphasized.

oh, and the iPhone 4 has HDR built in to the camera app. nifty little device.

I too am in love with this subtle HDR you speak of, love that pop.
HDR on the iphone 4 was a nice addition in a sense but it is not as good as it could have been. Anybody with an iphone 4 and is into HDR photography get the app 'ProHDR'. Best app on my iphone. It takes multiple photos at different exposures, then allows you to adjust either contrast, brightness, exposure etc in a preview mode, then saves them to your photos.

The point of HDR is to bring out detail from overexposes clouds and underexposed shadows.

    It's not about color...at all.

HDR is to broaden your camera's dynamic range because digital cameras do not work like the human eye. See what I mean here....

A true HDR image will look really natural. That's all your supposed to aim for.

Sadly, a lot of people's HDR nowadays has become very very oversaturated.

Although a true hdr image is supposed to be photorealisitc, many people do like the more hyper-realistic/grunge feel. I feel it really is all a matter of taste, but even with hyper- realistic editing, it need to be done with taste and is easily and most commonly overdone by people unfamiliar with the technique. I would suggest to all those wanting to experiment, do your reading and make sure you understand the true purpose of HDR.

Hey Bryant, here's one tip. Shoot into the light. By manually setting for various exposures capturing the full range of detail in the scene and merging them you'll get a much more "HDR" like effect.

Yeah, the end result is pretty interesting in the way it merges exposures allowing you to get a shot that no single exposure could ever capture. As it's been said, it's known to be pretty controversial as to the photography vs digital artness of it. I enjoy it

    Edit:

Thought I'd throw up a shot of mine for example. Hope you don't mind.

HDR must be done with three different exposures, or else it isn't HDR. Changing the brightness/contrast of one picture in Photoshop and making three different exposures is not HDR. HDR is useless and impossible in an action shot, and is really good for pictures with sky and clouds, so that everything is porperly exposed. It really bothers me when people do oversaturated HDR's that they think look really good. Those surreal looking photos are just a by-product of HDR, and don't really show what it is supposed to do.

The HDR function on the iPhone really bothers me. There is no possible way that it takes three bracketed images in the time it takes for one and then merges them together. It is not HDR.

To the OP, in that shot you have some haloing around the tops of the trees and the snowboarder. Play with the sliders a little more if you want to get rid of it. And Akimaveur nailed it and has a great, informative post that everyone should read.
